New Tune for Autumn

I try to do at least one song per year, preferably around the autumn equinox.

Here's this year's entry - "Fall Opus No. 1 in E Minor"

I wasn't able to use logic (and as such my favorite plugins I've gotten used to over the past several years) this time around so it was a bit of a pain putting it all together. I think the production suffered a bit from that.

Killer tune! Shiny plugins are nice, but not necessary; all you really need are EQs and compression, maybe some delay or reverb.
The guitar tone is quite big and beefy. Care to share how you tracked this?

yeah, that's about all I use anymore. mainly I got spoiled with logic's analog tape compressor. I'd just put it on everything and it made it all sound good.

The guitar tone came about when I initially tried to mic a cab and it sounded all boxy and shrill. Instead of figuring out the best mic positions, placement of the cab in the room and all that, I just chose a jcm800 setting on my digitech gsp 1101 and did one guitar (on the left) with a mesa cab IR and another (on the right) with a vintage 4 x 12 IR and went direct. The solos I jumped back and forth between cabs (IRs). I ended up having to EQ them a bit. I ran the bass through the GSP too on a bassman amp setting.

thanks! I need to listen to more tool actually. I noticed today how much louder your sabbathy song was compared to mine - makes mine sound very small. I don't like "mastering" my own stuff, so I often leave them quiet. Seems like I always kill it when I try to master.
