new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

DankStar

Her Little Mojo Minion
gotta stop working on this less I go insane.

called motrapt (most of the riffs are played twice).

it's pretty long - not for the feint of heart.

I like some aspects, dislike others. Guess that's how it goes.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16938354/motrapt premas 1.mp3 (just a pre-master; overall level is rather low)

bunch of different gear and such: gibson les paul special, agile 2000, ibanez 550, stew mac/warmoth strat, hamer bass, valvestate 8100 (middle solo only), marshall jtm30 combo, v30 cab, boogie cab, two different interfaces, alesis midi pads, radial rmp, slate drums

next song's going to be simple! and short.

Wow! That's EPIC man...so much killer stuff going on there. Excellent sounding mix too..lots of very cool/different tones & textures.

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

I was just thinking about when you would post a new recording, and here it is! Was looking forward to it, and this one does not disappoint. I like the bassline too. great composition, very toolian, very professional :beerchug:

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

Thank you gents! Guitar tone came out a bit different than I envisioned. I think I need a new mic. I also realized a reamp tone is a bit different than live. I prefer live.

That was jammin bro! Great grooves riffs, and aunchy , not raunchy, tones.

Maiden circa 1983 meets Metal Church.

Forget the tones and production for a moment. You can never make one that pleases everyone, especially not on gear forums. (which is still fine regardless. Every instrument is clear and not too clinical).

Now the music! That's another story. I f*cking love this and I listened the whole way through many times (I tend to get distracted and not listen to full clips here sometimes... not very nice... I know).

I feel that perfect balance of clever and proggy and solid and heavy. It's what I wish Opeth would/could do. (I have a love hate relationship with Opeth for falling short of that balance).

It takes someone who really has the passion and the fire in their belly to write this sort of stuff, eschewing the brutality contest it's become. This is what metal is all about... I can just feel it.

I'm not sure whether it's intentional and you actually know the theory behind some of the riffs you've played here or you're just going by feel (either is equally admirable) but those are some clever riffs. The last riff starting on the second beat... Groo-vee!

I found myself singing some of my lyrics to this in a sort of Russel Allen fashion. This is pretty much my favourite kind of metal. Using strong sounding riffs and structure over low tunings and overblown brutality yet still modern, original, thick and heavy.

I really hope you keep this up and it goes somewhere. This is the year for metal I believe and this is where I believe it's going to go.

Wow man, thanks for your words. That made my day. Can't say I understand the theory behind much of it, aside from trying to play sort of in key during solos. I do miss jamming with a real band & having vocals; really brings up the energy.

I love collaborating, especially long distance. I've been doing some session bass for rashayritto and I'd love to do more of this kind of thing if you'd have it.

that'd be cool. and the two of you guys teamed up sounds like it would be awesome!

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

I really dig this, Dankstar.
Some cool harmonized parts in there.

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

That was sweet BUT I will say I would of arranged the parts a lil bit different to flow a bit better but that was great. The mix sounded great for being pre mastered

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

That's cool you see it from an arranging perspective. Makes me want to find a composition/arrangement type book to figure that stuff out.

A lot of it is really just personal preference but yea their are certain ways to arrange songs some more complicated then others.

Re: new tune, kinda metal ditty (motrapt)

That was really cool! I also appreciate that you didn't go for the typical metal tone. Bravo!

For sure. I like the sounds as well. That JC-120ish clean tone is a treat. A lot of the time when I'm composing, I go by feel. Some of the songs on Fragmenta's album I went through 4 or 5 frustrating compositions for the more complex songs until I hit the one that in the pit of my stomach felt "right" when I heard it from start to finish. There are some things you can learn for traditional songwriting, but other times there's nothing to learn but yourself and just to get in tune with your feelings about how you want a song to represent them.
