Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

Hello!

I'm kinda a newbie around here, but I've lurked these boards a lot, always a great source for guitar info

Right now I'm planning on buying my first serious tube amp, which should be an upgrade from a friends valveking 212 that I'm using right now. My band plays a kind of punk rock and roll, check my sig to hear'em.

Anyway, I tried the new Vox AC30cc 2x12 combo, and fell in love with the sound. My idea is to get the head and a 2x12, and I'm guessing I can do better than the stock Vox cab. I'm looking for a cab to give it extra punch and volume, probably closedback, but I'm not sure what to look to in regards of speakers: higher voltage vs. lower, etc... Anyone tried the Vox with a v30 cab? Wouldn't a 120w cab be too much for the Vox? Should I look for lower wattage speakers?

As a reference I play lead, and the rythm guitar wil probaly have (he's on the buying stage too) a Orange AD30 with a v30 cab. I play a warmoth LP junior with a single APII.

And a question for the British and Euro brothers: you know if there's a british online store shipping Marshalls to Europe? Most of them won't carry them or won't export them, and now it's a good time to get one, with the current value of the British Pound

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

you can use a 120w cab with a 30w amp it will be fine. you do not want to go the other way, a 100w amp into a 60w cab can lead to blown speakers.

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

Thanks Jeremy, I figured that. What I'm afraid of though, is that setting a 30w amp on such powerful cab won't really get me the most of it, since I figure I won't be able to drive those speakers very hard.

But anyway, in a more general basis, who here tried the Vox AC30 or a similar head with a more powerful cabinet?

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

When i was younger (talking early -mid 1970's here) i rigged my AC30 with an output socket so i could disconnect the internal speakers and try out various other cabinets (which, back then, was often other people's quad boxes and 2 x 12's).

I have to say that i ended up concluding that the AC30 never sounded as good as when using it's own internal speakers, which surprised me somewhat, but also impressed me. However that was a long time ago and there are a lot of different speakers and cabinets available now, so if i were to do the entire process again i might end up with a different opinion. I thought it might be worth mentioning though......

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

Wattage doesnt matter in your case but make sure your ohmage matches!
Oh yeah - dont buy an amp that doest give you the sound you are after straight away. It can be expensive and frustrating experimenting....

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

There is a reason why the AC30 combos come with Celestion Alnico Blue speakers. This combination produces some great tone. Vox cabinets seem to be well made and I doubt you will be able to get a cabinet with those speakers for much cheaper than the Vox.

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

if you are set on getting a separate cab, check out avatar speakers. they've got decent prices and good choices, including the celestion blue and gold, both great choices for an ac30 type amp.

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots often uses AC30's into Marshall 4x12's with V30's. My custom classic sounded best with the internal speakers when I had alnico's in there (Red Fangs). Too bad you're in Spain, I could have sold you my modded AC30CC.

Re: Newbie! AC30 cab and Marshall questions!

People run stacks with a total speaker wattage way above the heads wattage and it can sound great that said VOX's work well with alnico blues and unless you can use a mix of say blues and G12h-30's then it may not sound as good although a few band s have been seen with VOX's on stacks not sure if they are connected though.
