Newbie from europe....

Just wanna introduce myself here.
53 and finally learning to play and a huge fan of classic rock and vintage gear, as i m a lefty always looking for nice affordable lefty guitars, i own three now, a vintage 73 japanese strat copy Rokkomann deluxe, said to come from the FugiGen factory, a Vantage218t from Korea mid nineties and i just bought an Epiphone sg g310 from 1995 also from Korea. I play through a Roland cube 30x and a '95 Fender Performer 1000.
As all axes don t have really good pu' s as i have learned on reviews , i ve joined here to learn what could be good upgrades for the Vantage and the Epiphone SG. The Rokkomann strat is original and almost 40 yrs old and that s how it stays for the moment.
I ve to admit of course as a beginner in playing it s hard to tell the difference in what sounds good and not, but that i want to learn too! I m also a huge audio high end fan , so i know what i hear and when it sounds great.
Love to hear and some advice and learn here.
As i m on Ipad now i can t upload any pics of my gear i ve lots of course..

Re: Newbie from europe....

I used to have a an Epi 310 (Welcome BTW!) and I wish I'd kept it. Although it was small and a bit toy-like it felt, played and looked great. I put a Custom 5/ Jazz pair in it and put a coil split push pull on them. It really sounded awesome for classic rock and the cleans were amazing with the splits.

I sold the 310 and eventually bought a G400. Yeah, it LOOKED amazing, but to me it just never felt or played as well as that little cheap 310.

Re: Newbie from europe....

Txs , i ll get the Epi 310 next saturday, and i m looking forward to it, i ll remember the pu s you mentioned as i surf the ebay s of our little country!

Re: Newbie from europe....

I got myself a 1990 SD JBJ on the net for a nice price, so i when ill get my epi i already have a nice pu to put in the bridge. Is it a good idea to make it splittable with a special push pull knob as on the epi prophecy models?

Just joined here and tons of info learned already and next weekend having a ball with my new axe and upgrade pu to put in..
First i gonna play it of course with the original pu s , so i can hear the difference good later on..

Re: Newbie from europe....

If you are serious I recommend you get a little recording setup (nothing fancy, just for reference) and start flipping used pickups in and out on Ebay.

Re: Newbie from europe....

Yeah, JBJ's seem to be really easy to find for really low prices, even in Europe. I have three of them myself, two in one guitar.

It depends what you will use it for whether it's worth putting in a coil split, but its a really, really easy and cheap mod to do so it probably IS worthwhile. Even if you dont really use it, it wont have cost much in time or money.

Re: Newbie from europe....

I ll do it then, its a nice feature to have and it won t cost a lot to put in.
I ll be looking for a jazz for the neck, that seems the best option as a pair, i bought my 1990 jbj for 50 euro s about 60 us ill guess.

Re: Newbie from europe....

I dont like the Jazz as a rule but in my 310 it seemed to work.

Re: Newbie from europe....

the jazz and jb shouldn't be paired together cause they suck together. the JB is cutting with a flabby base, lacks in the mids yet has a huge boost in the upper mids and it can be shrill in the highs.

the jazz neckversion which is most often used to pair up to the JB is a fail across the board for the JB. it sounds flaccid without balls, no character, no mids. no highs. no lows. no nothing at all. The magnet is just plain wrong, thats the issue here. the unoriented a5 is 10 times better than the polished, oriented alnico 5. it gives you sweeter highs, a bit more 'sag' and mush in the lows which is a good thing if you want to chord jazzy stuff or if you want to do some fatty leads. the highs sing and punch through. the alnico8 is the same deal only a bit hotter and tighter. sometimes you want more sag to get it tighter, strangely enough. no, really, the jazz-n sucks with it's original magnet.

The jazz-b is much better, and only on occasion. same problem. uoa5 or alnico8, please. the coils 'make' for such a clean, clear tone, and the alnico5 only emphasizes that character.

the JB is imho also a wrong pickup for the SG. cutting guitartone + cutting pickup = shreeky shack. the custom8 is the only sensible pickup for an SG if you want to hotrod something. Pearly gates works great too. 59B with an uoa5, or an alnico8. seth lover-set is also awesome. the screamin demon with an a8, the seymourizer (duncan distortion neck model!) works nicely in an SG too. great is the X2N, which has to be set up low, though. it will lose some output but will give you much more sweetness in your tone.

and this is coming from a JB-lover, can you imagine the 'rant' a JB-hater would give? ;)

Re: Newbie from europe....

just got my JBJ in the mail, with all the replies i dont know if i bought the right one for my epi sg , but what the heck, i ll have two guitars to try it in, and for the money i ve paid, i always can sell it for is my guess.
I have a Vantage T218 superstrat with a humbucker in bridge too and the Epi G310 from 1995 to put it in the bridge, what do you guys suggest would work the best, i' ll try your suggestions first then.

see my albums for the pics of my guitars and jbj

The thing with the 310 is, its not really all that close to a "regular" SG. Its a bolt on for a start and smaller too. My 310 felt a LOT different to the 400 I had. So, while a JB USUALLY might not work in an SG, there's every chance it will work fine in your 310.

You bought the JB to go in the 310, I would try it there first. If you dont like it, stick it in the superstrat - JBs LOVE superstrats!

Re: Newbie from europe....

Txs Varq, i ll try that first!
I know the 310 is just a simple cheap sg , and nowhere in the league of a real sg, but because i m just a beginner i d like to try out the different type of guitars to get familiar with the characteristics and sounds and feels of them.
When i am a bit better in playing, i can make better choices to buy a really good quality guitar.
As a collector of vintage and other cool watches( i own 30) i love to collect, so i ll do the same with my new hobby haha, but really good guitars are expensive so i ll start at the bottom end..and i m just having fun already.

Varq, i also can buy an used sd invader for only 30 euro , is that something to put in my guitars, on either one of them? Or is it not a good choice for the epi or superstrat
It s not the cost of course, that s make it so much fun...

The Invader is an awesome bridge pickup, 30 Euros?! Yes. Buy it.
Vivian Campbell used one in a superstrat for his Dio stuff IIRC, but to me the Invader is Metallica's "Master of Puppets" rhythm tone. Between the JB and the Invader, you should find something you like and if you dont, you can sell the Invader for a small profit I'm sure.

On the G310 I wasn't saying it's a cheap piece of crap, far from it, I really liked mine a lot better than the better quality G400 which just felt weird. I was simply pointing out a 310 isn't really like an SG other than looks - so pickup recommendations for an SG may not apply to the 310. You'll have to try things out for yourself. :)

Re: Newbie from europe....

Ok , i fully understand what you mean, i ve seen some nice reviews on the g310 i m not worried haha( for the money i paid you cant buy a new set of sd p u s .. And in the deal a practise amp pro aria II was vincluded i did well i think), i ll keep looking out for quality and suitable p u from sd and on the net in the netherlands sometimes you find cheap used ones, that s a sport too..

Re: Newbie from europe....

Want some decent advice mate ?

Stay away from the forums and learn to play to a decent standard 1st.

You'll be amazed how much better your existing gear will sound.

There are far too many cork sniffers on the forums who can lecture you about the difference in tone in magnets and such nonsense but can't play a note.

There's on guy in particular on the Gear Page fourm who's lecturing everyone on the merits of boutique single coils but his You Tube demo is an absolute joke... my mrs thought he was taking the p*ss... he simply can't play the guitar at all.

1st and foremost Enjoy learning and playing . It's a wonderful instrument and the more time you spend playing it, the more you'll discover. The rest will come with time. :friday:
