Newbie humbucker wiring question

I'm really confused on which wiring is what. I believe the (1) is normal humbucker wiring. The other two I'm not sure what they are called or what they do differently?

Any help appreciated!

Thanks a ton!

Hi Thunk,

Your diagram 1 is similar to my diagram 1. As you said, it is the typical way in which humbuckers are wired. (Both coils wired in series.)
Your diagram 2 is drawn with coil 4 reversed. Here the coils are in series but out of phase. This is a bad idea and I do not recommend it at all. (The output is seriously reduced and the pickup is no longer hum cancelling.)
Your diagram 3 is similar to my diagram 2. This shows the coils as being wired in parallel. (Again I am assuming coil 6 is being drawn reversed). This produces a brighter tone with somewhat less output than series wiring but it is hum cancelling.
Either of these 2 wirings will change the sound of your guitar but if you want both tones, you'll have to wire in a switch or a Seymour Duncan Triple Shot.

Re: Newbie humbucker wiring question

Thanks a bunch for the info! Now it makes sense. I should have included the wire colors or at least the start & finish for clarity...

I checked out your site and it is excellent! Very informative and easy to understand; wish I found it earlier :).

Re: Newbie humbucker wiring question

1 is normal "series", 2 is "in series out-of-phase:, and 3 is "parallel".

In the case of a humbucker, the coils out of phase with each other will cancel all same-frequencies. Since it is likely the coils are wound exactly the same, and placed side-by-side next to each other, there are going to be very little if any different frequencies between the coils. These left-over frequencies that are not cancelled out will be all that is heard, along with the 60 Hz hum.

Yes, the humbucker out of phase with itself is a terrible wiring idea and I am totally against it.
