Newbie Question

Apologies in advance to all the forum veterans who have heard this question a thousand times, but I was unable to find the answer during my own searches.

I just would my first humbucker with a StewMac kit in my Schatten pickup winder. I wound both coils on the right side arm in a clockwise direction. Yesterday I read that humbuckers coils have opposing windings. Does this mean that I should have wound one coil on the left side arm, or does the reverse just come from how you wire them together?

Re: Newbie Question

you can wire them opposite but the idea is to do one on each arm

Re: Newbie Question

You don't have to be concerned about coil windings in a humbucking pickup.
I'd say the huge majority (if not all humbuckers) have their coils in the same direction.
So how do they have "opposite windings"?
It is in the way in which they are connected.
Imagine two coils side by side - both are wound clockwise.
Following the winding from the center (START) of one coil to the end (FINISH) of that coil we have moved in a clockwise direction.
Now the connection does not go to the START of the next coil.
As you said Dave or does the reverse just come from how you wire them together?
Precisely.
The winding goes from the FINISH of the first coil to the FINISH of the second coil.
Following the winding in the second coil, it travels counter-clockwise from the FINISH to the START.

Re: Newbie Question

Buy another kit and do both bobbins on the opposite arm. Then you have two pickups the right way. That is if the Schatten has not broke the bank.

Re: Newbie Question

welcome Dave i wind all my humbuckers on one side of my winder & strat n tele on ther other side of my winder its a lollar type clone winder & its similar to your schatten with a few mods winder as well
right side, left side don't mean a roll of beans clockwise, cclockwise don't either just connect your FINISH wires together & your START wires will be your ground & your hot wire

Re: Newbie Question

this is same as strat pickups with rw/rp
you dont have to wind the middle pickup opposite the bridge & the neck . you just swap the wires & reverse the magnet polarity

yep. the tldr version:
instead of going start(coil)finish-start(coil)-finish, it goes
start(coil)finish-finish(coil)start since in order for it to be humbucking and in phase, you need the coils to be rwrp. even if one of the coils are not technically reverse wound, it's wired that way. reverse polarity is obviously automatic since each coil sits on opposite sides of a magnet.

Re: Newbie Question

Thank you for the feedback. Lots to learn, but the first pickup works so I am off and running.
