Next forum pickup design (2014)

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

Surely Duncan has a comprehensive range of metal oriented pups already, what with the Black Winters, Pegasus, Sentient, Nazgûl, and the Blackout variants. Not trying to sound snide, just observing. Moreover, I'd think much of djentability also comes from the amp.

Let's be honest, for a lot of pickup swappers, maybe even most, it's surely more a thing of identity than of sound. Look at how many pickups, ones from other winders in particular, name their products for specific genres or artists. Usually Seymour Duncan has been neutral in their pickup naming to reflect their true versatility, but I think they're under pressure to follow suit and give their pickups more specific identities, and they've done that with the "Lord of the Strings" series and it seems to have paid off. I think it backfired with the Ant I Texas Hots / Ant II Surfers because I've seen a lot of people turned off to them since they aren't interested in those genres, not to mention I don't even think they're ideal for said genres. Some winders like BKP and D Allen are nearly patronizing in their naming, like suggesting you want a certain pickup for a certain song, like the perfect pickups for Cliffs of Dover.

There are so many guitarists that must replace their stock pickups, no "wait and see how I like the stock pickups", they're coming out no matter what. The guitar is not personal until it has aftermarket pickups, even though the best selling replacements are vintage PAF and vintage wound Strat, pickups which are the least distinct from most stock pickups. Take out the slugs and replace them with black hex screws, stick it to the Man. SD should offer a Djent pickup. It's money on the table. Even more optimal, they should start a subsidiary to release these pickups and shed the name "Seymour Duncan". Grandpa's guitar had Seymour Duncans in it.

Ironically, that's part of the appeal... Jeff Beck and Jimi are respected today for the path they blazed.

It took decades to establish Seymour Duncan as a brand identity.
The man, the human being, was someone known to a few of the elite.

A separate metalz subsidiary may not be optimal, since it would take staffing, ad money, artist relations (AKA celeb endorsements), etc to make it viable.
Divisioning doesn't always work; witness Detroit cars. A Chevy is a Pontiac (RIP) is a Caddy...

I suppose. I only swap a pup as a last resort. Like to experiment as much as the next bloke, but in the end, I'd rather be playing music.

Anyway, carry on :).

One of the worst ideas I can imagine. SD has built up a name as a quality product. That takes decades.

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

I was about to *plonk* Drex but there is a point here.

When SD picks names that creates images in the customer's head it is usually a really badly chosen name.

Sorry :)

The point about the company name... Maybe *plonk*?

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

Think Scion vs Toyota, an off shoot brand to appeal to generation Y. Bare Knuckle Pickups makes good pickups, but I think they also get a boost for simply being a young company.

Well they get a boost from being in the UK where local people don't feel screed by the perceived cost of importing the US stuff.

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

Yes, DreX. Clearly Seymour Duncan should remove his name from a respected product that he's worked his entire life to build. That reputation of quality must be an immense hindrance and financial burden in today's market.

How long have you been a business consultant?

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

On topic: I haven't done enough pickup modding to have a strong idea what might be desirable and missing from the product line, however I have seen a number of threads around particular magnet and/or coil customizations that might suggest something to ask for.

Off topic, for me the Seymour Duncan name is so important on a pickup, that I will do research to check if the pickup is legit if I even see the font is slightly off.

I can't wait to see where this thread and pickup idea go...lol

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

My choice for a Forum pickup would be a Custom Shop Seth, potted, and slightly overwound--similar to the 50th Anniversary A2 Seths they did for Musician's Friend. Or perhaps something like the Bonamassa set with the A3/A4 magnets.

Thanks for getting this back on topic Bill.

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

Gents and Ladies,
I did what someone mentioned earlier in the forum. It turned out great. Please bear with me. I mentioned this some time go. I took a TRMBUCKER cover, cut just the legs off the strat 57/62, and it went right into the trembucker cover with the rods poking perfectly out of the screw poles. I flipped the strat pickup so the more "raduised" part of the pick up was on the top 4 strings. I then HAND MADE legs on the outside of the cover so I could drop in straight in my SG neck, and flipped it around so the poles were nearer the bridge. Radius poles under high E,B,G,D.
The only mod to the instrument was the black pup ring needed just a touch of snding on the ends. The top and bottom fit perfectly. I will be using this as my number 1 or 2 next time I get to play. Which might be soon. To me it is a big deal to get to play.
It sounds just like it should. A single coil in the neck, and paired with my usual Seth Lover A5 mag in the bridge. The combinations are beatiful together and stand stong by themselves. Bonus- my friend thought I had a humbucker in the neck till I made him look closer.

I wish there was a forum guy near Tacoma so he could take pictures to show. Someone wrote in this forum: no pictures-it didn't happen. Well, I did it and I am very pround of this cool mod
P.S. Thank you if you stuck this post out with me. I just had to post!

:lmao::chairfall

I started to offer a serious response to this, but it so ridiculous on its own that the effort would be wasted.

In Australia, 'plonk' is the cheapest, sh!ttiest wine you can buy, so maybe not :D. You wouldn't want a pu that gives you the worst hangover ever.

That would be pretty cool; I'd slap it in one of my superstrats if I had the ££.

Re: Next forum pickup design (2014)

I'd like to offer a suggestion that would also be something I've asked the Custom Shop to make but they didn't seem interested.

A narrow ( 50mm ) spaced neck single coil, voiced like an Antiquity but with a magnet stagger more suited to modern necks. ( the raised G and sunken B are stupid )

I find the low E in particular is lost on my Strats and I do not believe a narrow single coil is hard to make. After all, there are a few who make them but I simply love the tone on the Antiquity singles.

If we all buy one, it should be cheap and maybe Duncan will pdecide to offer all neck singles in the narrower spacing.

I know I'm not alone in my thoughts on spacing and stagger.

I like this too, but also go a little lighter than normal on the wind too. Seems you could mix and match the standard magnet lengths to get a balance.

However - I'd still like to see the normal spacing also as well as I typically like 3 neck pickups in my Strats.
