NG for Xmas - Fender Lone Star strat - replacing the humbucker - PG tips?

Re: NG for Xmas - Fender Lone Star strat - replacing the humbucker - PG tips?

I’m not allowed to touch it until Xmas! ( it’s still in the store until my wife pays the tiny balance left and collects it)

But I’m 100% sure it’s one of the late ones with the twin head - in the new colours ( ocean turquoise) it’s not wired like original lone star with auto split bridge and middle, it’s got regular 5 way switching plus S1 switch to split to the north coil.

I’m buying it used from a store - the vendor knows which model and pickup - plus I’ve played it - it’s not a pearly gates. It still sounds great, but I prefer the pearly gates.

It’s this very model and colour

Sweet guitar, and yes on the twin head. (pg+ would (and has) worked great!)

And sorry you have to wait on it...My wife got me a Peavey xxx super 40 combo for a steal (bday and xmas gift) and it sits in the closet to be played whenever I want.. (her idea mind you)

Awesome, thank you for the clarification! That has to be a Mexi Strat, not one of the originals.

Enjoy!

I've got this current setup, w 250k pots in an American standard that is on the bright side. An old 80s pg in the bridge and the stock fat 50s in the neck and middle. It sounds really good, I don't think the 250k is too dark with the PG, by contrast a Bare knuckle VHII in the same setup was too dark and middy. I haven't messed with the autosplit in this one yet, but the full PG with the fat 50s middle is a decent sound with a little bit of quack to it.

I have an HSH strat and I find that because I selected the humbuckers to balance with the single coil, coil splits are unnecessary ( still have it, never use it) and the position 2 and 4 cluck sounds great, but splitting to the south coils is just ever so slightly more spanky in those positions.

Well I now have the Lone Star and after a bit of playing,I’m really surprised how good the Fender twin head sounds. It’s a bit hotter than a PG but after lowering it a tad it’s not so overpowering, plus DCR being over 10K it does split really well. The bridge split on its own is probably not a sound I’ll use that much even though it’s sounds good, but sounds perfect combined with the middle pickup. I think it probably would work better without the S1 and use the original Lone Star wiring.

I’m so happy with it that I think I’ll leave it just as it is for now.

Glad it’s working out for you. Ever since I got a nice amp and the right OD, I’ve been swapping pickups way less.

^^^This.

Amazing how many posts I've seen advising young or new players to get a better amp and see how that sounds first.

Yes, I do have 3 decent amps - but when I tried it in the shop through a Marshall MG amp it sounded good, but not as good as I expected. As soon as I was allowed to play it at home though, it’s sounds great through all 3 amps. Sounds especially good through my Roland Blues Cube - it’s very well suited to that. Sounds good in my Marshall AVT2000 amp and my Fender Deluxe 112 plus as well, but the Blues Cube makes pretty much any guitar sound good, and a great guitar sounds fantastic!

But the bridge pickup needed lowering a bit bit as at just over 10K it does sound thick and hot.
