NGD - '05 SG Classic

High Voltologist
Wasn't really looking for anything, I was helping a friend find something he liked and I stumbled across an '05 SG Classic. I thought it was a Special but I guess Gibson just wanted to play "Confuse the Guitar Junkie" that year :smack:

Someone fitted an ABR bridge on the Nashvillian posts and it flattened out a bit but otherwise it seems to be stock. Well they clearly replaced a white button tuner knob on the d string at some point but meh who cares? It works fine and just looks a little more "aged" I guess?

Picked it up yesterday afternoon and gigged with it last night, worked out great! From the nice chunky 50's-ish neck to the grind-y P90's I am smitten I tell ya. Got rid of a really cool early Heritage that I've been meaning to refin. It had just been sitting around for a few years now so I got away pretty clean and added nothing to the pile, win.

I hate you! (j/k).

I had one of those. The only reason it was sold was because we were expecting child #2 and we needed to stockpile cash since my wife doesn't get paid if she doesn't work. Absolutely LOVED that guitar. The only things I changed are the volume pots. Yanked the 300K's for 500K's, left the tone pots stock. It opened it up a little without getting crazy.

Great score, man.

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

I may change them to 500’s but we’ll see. I’ve done that before on some of my P90 Gibsons.

Nice! Reminds me of Sosomething’s and Pink Unicorn Horsey’s. Just needs a bigsby.

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

Well I’d rather a Maestro if I go trem but not really looking for that right now

Very sweet, I still need to scratch my P90 itch. I loved a Fret-King Esprit 3 that had 3 P90s a few years back. One day...

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

Wow...that's a great looking axe and with P-90 pick ups! It almost looks like Tony Iommi's red SG he had back in the early days of Sabbath.;)

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

If it has those Gibson logo pots like mine does you should probably change them all out. Those were CGE pots, and the internals on those are mostly plastic with a really narrow resistance path, inferior to the construction of CTS pots and the like. They are out of the pot business now, and I say good riddance. There is an article on a well-known LP forum (hint-hint) where the guy compares the construction of the CTS and CGE pots and you can see how the CGE's are inferior. My SG Classic had a bad CGE pot right out of the gate, IMO they suck.

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

I've replaced stock Gibson pots when they fail but long as they're working I've got no real issue with them. I sprayed these with some cleaner and they spin a little better now which was the only hangup. I generally use CTS pots but lately I've been messing with some Bourns/SD pots and they work pretty well too.

The stock wiring on this guitar is super clean and works fine for now. It's remarkably quiet for P90's so I am not much looking to mess with it. I screw around with my guitars so much it is kind of nice to have a stocker for a change.

I have the feeling this and my '17 LP Trib are going to be my main gigging guitars for a while.

That guitar will sound amazing with The Heartless Devils stuff.

After I swapped out the volume pots in the one I had, I held on to the Gibson branded ones and recently put one in my Frankenstrat. The 300K works great with the Screamin' Demon I have in there.

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

Congrats, that's a nice guitar. I already have an SG, but it would be nice with P90 SG in addition..

Re: NGD - '05 SG Classic

And how did it do?

Killed it, used it for the entire set we did. Didn’t retune once and just tweaked the eq a bit as the set progressed. I was using a house HR Deluxe so I wasn’t entirely sure i had it set where it needed to be at the start. Thing just plays and feels so right.

Nice! I’ve thinking of adding an SG to the stable, but haven’t found one I gel with, yet.
