NGD: 1975 Guild G212

I happened to be browsing the local Craigslist Saturday night when I came across this... It was around 11pm when I saw it, so I sent a text the next day. After a hectic day at the fair I drove across the metro to have a look...

It's in pretty good shape for a 42 year old guitar; just a few dings here and there other than this:

Between getting that fixed, a fret polish, maybe a new nut & saddle, and some strings I should be able to get it together for not too much out of pocket.

I think I did pretty well @ $400 w/ non-original HSC.

Also, is anyone familiar with these tuning machines?

The bodies look like Gotoh and they work quite well, but I can't say I've seen that logo or the offset mounting screws before.

crack in the soundboard? Does it go all the way through? ...Looks like it might be superficial.

Grain is nice and tight, looks like some quality Sitka. Some nice purfling.

I haven't looked with a mirror, but I'm pretty confident that it doesn't go all the way through.

They make these things that hook up to your cellphone with a little gooseneck and a light on the end cheap from China.Or you might be able to feel that far in with your fingers.

I found a mirror and took a look, and it looks like a soundboard crack that was repaired quite a while ago. There's still a bit of a crack in the finish on top, so I'm going to have my tech look at it and re-do the repair if necessary. Otherwise I figure a bit of touch up on the finish crack should do it.

Either way I still think I got a good deal. I was looking at a similar guitar a month or so ago with a much larger (repaired) crack running from the midpoint of the bridge to the back rim. That one was mid/late 80s and sunburst finish, but the asking price was $800.

That thing has to sound huge!

I certainly hope so...

At the moment it actually sounds pretty lousy, but those strings have got to be at least 5 years old; the high end is so dead that it almost sounds like a 6-string a lot of the time. I'm currently debating whether I want to have it checked out first or if I want to throw on some decent strings and play it for a while.

find a mirror or use your phone and make sure the crack isnt all the way through. assuming its not, id throw a set of 12's on it and tune it down a half step and see how it goes.
