NGD! 1996 Gibson Les Paul Standard!

I've begged Brentrocks for awhile for this one. He teased and tormented me and wouldn't let it go. Then a sweetheart deal on a Heritage 157 LE came up and was finally willing to sell. We worked out a deal and early Sunday morning I was able to pick this beauty up from Brent. I was hoping to get a guest appearance on Brent's Guitar Emporium, but that's a lot of windshield time... Anyway, I've read where the 90's Gibson were the best ones produced since the golden years. This one doesn't disappoint! Chunky round 50's profile, no slim D profile here. Brent did a great job on the repair, you can barely see it. Plain top tobacco burst with a one piece mahogany back. I fully intended to replace the pickups, but damn, these sound great. Must of aged a bit or something, but they don't sound like the usual 490R/498T you find today. Anyway, here she is!

Re: NGD! 1996 Gibson Les Paul Standard!

Very nice! LOVE my [2001] LP Standard! Until the new Anderson Drop Top showed-up over the weekend, the Standard was my favorite guitar. Still is for all-out fat, crunchy, old school rock tones. Congrats!!!

I have a 1994 and with stock 498T/490R combo, and age matters on those pickups, as I posted previously:

That was a decent thread. A bit too many insults, but on a forum this large, I'm not surprised. I watched an old Gary Moore Video and he had a vintage 60's ES-335. He mentioned how great it was and how its aged to perfection, so on. But when you look at when the video was made, that guitar was only about 20 to 25 years old.

I've been told the 90's Gibsons are best years since before Norlin bought them. I've also heard if I find a Studio from the 90's to buy it because they put Ebony fretboards on them...

I've got two LP Studios from the 90s that are very nice and have ebony boards. Though I still prefer my 2001 Standard. Apples vs. Oranges I guess.

I've had a couple nice Studios... but the extra bling of binding to the body and neck can't be passed up. Especially since this cost what used Studio runs these days!

Yeah, I really do like my Studios, especially my beat-up black one. I call her "Ugly Betty" or "Black Betty" depending on my mood. She's heavy and has a fat neck. TONS of tone and attitude. Had even more 'tude with the Duncan Blackouts that I got her with. But I replaced them with Duncan JB/59s because that's more my style.

At any rate, my Standard is also heavy and has a fat neck, but is just in a whole other category in terms of quality of tone, as well as cosmetics.

Re: NGD! 1996 Gibson Les Paul Standard!

Yeah, late 80's to late 2000's are Gibson's second golden era. Unfortunately, Gibson has now entered it's second Norlin era with 2015 models spiraling straight into the ground. It's not that the quality is bad, it's that every design choice they've made was the wrong one.

I'm no Gibson basher either. I'm all about used Gibsons that are gems.

I've been drooling over that new Gibson ES Les Paul with the F holes in it. Looks like it might have some great tones in there, but be lighter than an LP, and smaller than a 335. Have you heard anything about these yet?

It's not a new deal... They used to call it the Les Paul Florentine... But it did have a Florentine cutaway. Essentially the same thing. Might give a slightly woolier tone, but when you add enough dirt, it's just eye candy.

Yeah, I remember that. I like the looks of the new one, but good points about the sound. Granted, I have jazzier/blusier tones in mind for it if I ever get one.
