NGD : 3 pickup Gibson

For the second time in the last 6 years or so, my love affair with PRS has ended, and I decided to part ways with my 3xP90 custom 22. Didn't work out, time to move on. So here's the new 3 pickup girl in town.

SG.jpg

She's a 2013 'Captain' Kirk Douglas signature SG. Only 400 made, it featured a mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard, with that shinny vibrola. The pickups are all Gibson 57 classics, which don't sound bad at all. The controls are sort of funky though : volumes and tones for the neck and bridge pickup, with each of those 2 individually coil-tapped through the tone controls. The middle pickup is blended in by twisting the stem of the 3 way switch, like a volume control. Very cool, very usable.

Anyways, I enjoy it a lot. We will see if she ends up being a keeper, but I dig the style. Here is a better picture for reference.

Very cool. I'd love to see it with a black guard, witch hat knobs, ABR-1, and an engraved trim plate on the Vibrola.

Re: NGD : 3 pickup Gibson

weren't you going to get an SG a couple years ago? around the time you picked up the LP?

that is a classy piece of gear man, congrats

Nice. SG's look so good with Maestros. I like white pickguards on them too. Are you going to change the PU's?

I had a black SG standard a few years ago. It hit the road to fund my Les Paul, because I had very limited funds at the time, and I dig the LP sound more than I dig the SG vibe. Glad to have another one in the arsenal right now.

Thanks! I also dig the Vibrola, and the white guard is sort of growing on me. At the moment, I have no intention of changing the pickups. I have a 57 classic in the neck of my LP and in both spots in my 339, so I am fairly familiar with them. With the way my rig is set up, even with similar pickups, it's letting the differences in sound caused by the design of the guitar shine through. We never know, but I doubt I'd modify the guts on this one.

Re: NGD : 3 pickup Gibson

That sure is a beautiful SG. The first time I saw the price for this SG, I thought to myself Gibson either screwed up the pricing or down graded the materials. I never saw one of these in person. And I am hoping for the best.

What is the build and quality like?
How does it play?
What kind of tones can you get with the blend pot?

I really hope it plays a great as it looks.

It terms of construction and material, it's very, very similar to the standard that I had, but with a nicer neck carve. It also has fancier inlay work at the headstock and such. I have no complaints about the build quality what so ever, and it plays really nice. It's not fast by any means, but it's very resonant and sustains better than the last SG I had, which was a concern for me with the vibrola.

The tones from the middle pickup are different, but nothing to write home about. Adds a little extra girth to the sound and a bit of a different flavour. Not exactly sure how to describe it, but it's cool.

Re: NGD : 3 pickup Gibson

Ok, so after jamming it today and consulting with my drummer, I've made a decision.

I am going to set this guitar up exclusively for slide.

It has everything I could ask for in a slide guitar in terms of tone and neck access. I have to replace the bridge, since the original owner put on a crap piece of **** roller bridge on that I can't stand. As soon as the new bridge comes in, I'll be setting it real high, and throwing big strings on her. Then the bridge pickup gets adjusted, and I will be tuning it to open G.

Should be fun.

Re: NGD : 3 pickup Gibson

Have not seen any in the local area, so, I appreciate the response. Your guitar makes me think of the old 3 pick-up SG Custom.
If the gods be willing, may it turn out to be a keeper.

And forgive my bad manners, but to keep the beer police from busting down the door, you are drinking a Belgium Beer in the tulip glass, yes?

Proper glassware is important. Always use the right glass for the right beer. This situation is no exception to that rule.
