NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

i had a real 1966 casino. was superb.
I played a friend's modern epi casino..totally dead.

...is this one diffferent? if so...then it looks cool....

I've played a few 60's casinos, mainly back in the 60's. They were way out of my reach price wise but they were almost more desirable than a Les Paul.
Necks that played like silk and a feel and resonance that set them apart.

Any one able to nail the guitar in this clip at 4:51. the red one.

I think it's a gibson but I can't remember. The guitarist is Glyn mason. He lived in the other half of a divided house that I lived in. I shared the other half with his bass player and roadie. Two brothers who were boring as eff. All they did when not working with the band was play back gammon all day.
Any way I got to play that guitar a few times and yes it was great.

You're awakening a long forgotten yearning for a guitar of this style.
I hope you enjoy your new guitar Scott.:14:

CONGRATZ SCOTT . . .

. . . imho, those are GREAT guitars, beautifull necks with a super raw (in the best possible way) tone.

I was 2min away from pulling the trigger on a cherry red Casino about 4 months ago (standing there in the shop/Ft. Lauderdale), and then i saw the "new" Gibson ES-330L.
Now i am saving (ermmm, trying too) for the Gibbo.

The cherry red models look sooo much better in real life.
Here you can hardly see the wood grain/pattern.

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

Bad set up ?
Bad wood ?
Bad P90's ?
on the modern epi?
set up was fine.
wood was crap i think. more glue than ply probably.
pickups were the usual epiphone fare, but i did not plug it in. I played it for about an hour. I was doing a session for this fellas record, and he had his casino there , so i fiddled on it while the engineer was doing stuff. i really wanted to like it, but i just could not get it to speak. Maybe im spoiled, but one of my students has an epi wildkat that is a lot better sounding.
Perhaps it was just a bad axe.
If these reissues are better tho....id be really keen to try one. 330s/casinos are a lot of fun.
actually my old axe was one of these:
300px-Ciaola-std.jpg

which is an AL Caiola model (a casino with trick electronics and no f holes), but noone knows this model so i always called it a casino.

cool - enjoy scott

and remember to sand it down to nude wood to go for the full john lennon effect :D

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

very nice

my last NGD choice was between the new lenon casino and a 60's tribute LP

I don't regret my decision in the least, but i doubt i would have either way--both fantastic guitars

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

Monday can't get here soon enough. I probably should have just bought that desert sand one at GC but MF had the free shipping, no tax and that $100 off certificate.

What is bizarre about the one that was at GC sitting low and a bit abused, it had been sitting around there for a long time in the sun up front or something. The hang tag was had left a shadow on the fretboard wood where it hung. This is supposed to be a fairly new model, but that shadow had me thinking it'd been sitting there for a year or so. Kinda weird. Maybe the plastic in the hang tag interacted with the wood somehow other than sunshine.

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

I need to go snap some photos.

Impressions. Great tone. This is supposed to have a US set up. Basically, crazy high action. Once I got the bridge lowered down to a nice happy medium, two strings won't intonate. I wish I had a Nashville bridge sitting around as I think that would give it just enough saddle play that it'd be good. Nut needs to be filed down a bit. Frets 1-3, some notes are a bit off. Fretwork is very good.

Bad news is I'm off traveling again in the AM. Good news is I have 45 days to figure it out.

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

i wonder if its the guitar itself or the gibson pickups. i had an asian ebony that i hated. i would love to have a good Casino though...

I'm sure the pickups had a lot to do with it, but even unplugged it sounded better.
The 16th fret neck joint changes things quite a bit, too.
I sincerely wish I had the cash to lay out for one of these right now. It truly is the best thing to wear an Epi name in a long time.

Re: NGD: 61 Epi Casino 50th Anniversary

On the reissue, the Gibson pickups were smooth and fat clean but with a good grit with overdrive.
The standard casino sounded fizzy and brash by comparison.

I'm having MF send me a replacement. Hoping next one will intimate better.

The red one is a Gibson 345 TDC. I had a 1968 345 TDC...a wonderful guitar. I know a lot of people will slam the Varitone, but I thought it was great.
