NGD: A La Cabronita project

Another project that has been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. This one started with an email from Warmoth about the round of Sugar Pine bodies they had. Like an idiot I go look of course, and Warmoth has this La Cabronita body on blow out for like $125. I moved on to see what was in the neck showcase (just looking because I need another project like Slash needs a drink), and I come across a quartersawn tele neck for like $159 or something.

I had to do it you understand. :D

So the parts sat waiting for me to get around to them, and this past week I finally did. The Sugar Pine body is extremely lightweight, and quite soft, so I was hesitant to pay for a paint job that would easily chip off with the slightest ding. The Watco oil on the strat necks gave me the idea, and off I went.

Whats the worst thing that can happen?

It took a couple of coats of oil to get some of the blotchiness out. Warmoth loves their sealer... :grumble:

I let the oil dry while I worked on the CAR tele, and then hit it with the spray on Tru Oil. After the first coat.

I think I did 5-6 spray on coats, and then ordered hardware and pups. I used a Rutters bridge and TV Jones Pickups.

I am still debating on a pickguard. I have some sheets of bakelite coming so I can make a proper one. I may stick it on acoustic guitar style. The guitar only weighs 5.5 pounds and is very resonate.

That looks great even without a guard. Have you considered skipping the pickguard entirely?

What's your method for spraying Tru-Oil? Do you take the regular bottled Tru-Oil and thin it, or did you try that newer off-the-shelf spray can version?

Oh yeah, still deciding on the guard.

Nothing special, just right out of the rattle can. I sanded down the body with 1000 after the second coat and again before the final. Tru Oil self levels so well, most of the time you don't even have to buff it.

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

How meaty is the neck on that? (This is important!) I assembled a single pickup Warmoth LCT last year. I prefer it to the Fender USA FSR model.

In my opinion, a Cabronista Tele with a pickguard would be over-dressed.

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

I was going to say this would look great with a relic job but I bet in about 3 years it will look 30 years old anyway. Great work as always!

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

this is my favourite of your recent ones.
if you've ordered the material, you'll make a pickguard ; ]
what shapes are you considering?

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

Great work. How does it play and sound?

To be honest, I am a little frustrated with it. I think the guitar sounds nice and clear unplugged, but no so much plugged in. I have been messing with it all evening, and I just cannot get a sound out of it I like. Maybe I don't TV Classics... <shrug>

I have adjusted the pickups up and down and they just sound bland and muddy.

Happy to hear suggestions.

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

Try lowering the pickup housings and having the screws stick out further. ;)

I find the bridge position TVJ Classic a wee bit disappointing on the Fender USA LCT. The Classic Plus on my Warmoth has the extra oomph that I expected. (My Warmoth also happens to have a Mahogany body and their "boat" section neck.)

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

You could always send the pickups to MJ and have her rewind them to have a higher resonant peak.

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

That's weird, they shouldn't sound muddy.
I only have experience with the humbucker mount ones, but IIRC these aren't set like other pickups, the screw height is quite important (factory set and best left alone) and the pickup height is dictated by balancing volume between the open and 12th fret positions.
there's info on the TVJ site, if you haven't already looked.
Don't give up on her dude!!

Re: NGD: A La Cabronita project

Dude, That is awesome! I agree with Nacho, Can't wait to see what it looks like in the future.
