NGD: A little something I put together while finish dries

I didn't want you to think I was sitting on my duff while the EJ neck dries, so I started on a few other things.

I have a couple of older Charvel Promod necks hanging on my shop wall for a few years now. I never really had a plan for them other than possibly selling them along with the USA neck plates (you know me and parts) :D

I start snooping around to see what kind of money the parts are bringing, and saw that Charvel had released several neon colors for 2017. :eek5:

Hmmmm...I am a child of the '80's ya know... I start snooping in the parts stash, and yes some NOS Schaller tuners. Yep there are some "1984" Floyd bridges :scratchch

I scored a new neon yellow body and pickguard from the dismantlers, and we were off.

Japanese neck that I removed that horrid yellow dye to reveal some beautiful flame. Some Watco and wax like a proper Charvel (and USA logo)

Still some minor tweaking, but it is going to be awesome.

I couldn't stop with just one (of course)

Dude! You always get me with the Strats lol. I'm going to have an Ayrton inspired NGD in a couple of months and it'll be a strat haha. Nice builds. I was born in the 80s and I love the neon colors, go figure ha.

Can you explain the watco and wax? I been mulling over a maple neck with a super light oil or wax.

Have you tried to sell it to ACEbob yet?

Can you explain the watco and wax?

Charvel necks from the early ‘80’s came finished in Watco danish oil that was amber tinted or sometimes lacquer if the customer requested it. The “raw neck” thing was really popularized by Charvel (and EVH) during this period, and when Fender first released the Promod line (2008) they just sealed the necks and left them unfinished in an attempt to replicate that raw Maple look. Some people complained the USA necks were too white and not finished like the originals. When production moved to Japan, theJapanese supplier used a yellow tint over the sealer in an attempt to quell those complaints and it just looked silly. Thankfully the yellow comes right off with lacquer thinner and you are left with just a sealed neck.

I wipe down my unfinished necks with pre tinted Watco oil (Golden Oak) and then sometimes Tru Oil. You can finish with wax if you want for that EBMM neck finish.

The yellow guitar got Watco, Tru Oil and wax. The green will get nothing but dirt. :p

Im an 80s metal guy and I highly approve of these builds!!! And yes, want a Hamer too!!!

Re: NGD: A little something I put together while finish dries

Yup...riggggghhhhht up my alley. When I read 'have a couple of older charvel promod necks ...' I got a little jealous.

I've been wanting to grab a mij (or usa, but i found the mij's were a bit more rolled) promod neck for awhile for a slime green, one slanted hum machine...

Re: NGD: A little something I put together while finish dries

That's quite the colour combination on your Charvel guitar. Maybe you should call it "The Rainbow".;)

I found these while uploading the EJ pics.

MIJ compared to MIA neck color.

You can see how yellow the MIJ neck are and how much comes off with just LT.

The headstock face has poly over the tint and decals, so that gets sanded.

I'm also a big fan of neon colors. Love that green one!!!

The flame on the back of that neck for the yellow neon guitar is gorgeous.

Re: NGD: A little something I put together while finish dries

I thought Vai's green meanie Charvel was the coolest guitar when I first saw it (Alcatrazz?) as a teen. A friend who was heavy into Zappa turned me onto Vai with Flex-Able. I was already heavy into punk at that time and anything that was off the beaten path was worth a listen.
