New guitar day. Schecter, Asian made. Ebony fingerboard, Ernie Ball compensated nut, compound radius from 12 to 16 inches. American made Pasadena Pups.0125181342.jpg

The action is somewhat higher than I like, my worry is how low the bridge is now. Its not real high, but my other LP style guitars actions are really low I think. Still dialing in the tones, overall seems a little thin on the bridge Pup. Any thoughts?
Ben????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

So what's the big deal with compensated nuts? From whay I've played of them, I can't find an advantage.

The guitar stays in tune better as you play up and down the fret board. It's like the Buzz Feiten nut which is staggered.

Open chords ? Wasnt my primary reason for buying

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

What's the neck profile on that Solo II Custom? Thick, thin, shoulders, etc.?

The specs make it seem like the neck is a toothpick, which would be shame since the overall styling would seem to appeal old-school players who prefer bigger necks.

I've never liked 'em. I had a slew of Ltd guitars with the Earvana compensated nuts. I guess that I've played too many years with regular straight nuts, because the compensated nuts always sounded out of tune to me.

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

The neck is on the thinner side. The PUPS have the most wah sound I have. I can see where some wouldn't like that. I do, I have plenty guitars and dont want em to all sound the same. Not really an old school guitar, or a shred guitar either. Right dead in the middle. I love the neck

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

I cant tell much of a difference TBH. I have a good ear and she sounds fine for open 5 chords. I like that neck, a good fit for me.

Sounds like you need a lesson on how to tune and intonate a guitar. Or maybe you normally play very heavy-handed and squeeze those strings out of tune no matter how accurately it's tuned in the first place.

I'm not a great fan of Earvana...they are fine and certainly better than straight nuts, and a good starting point. But the thing that I've notice over the many years I have been making compensated nuts is that every guitar and string setup requires a slightly different compensation. Those that are not willing to spend the time tweaking their nuts and intonation will not be happy with stock compensated nuts.

Generally speaking...we like what we are used to and we are not willing to change.

It was my thinking, that one would spend less time tweaking his nuts after he passes adolescence...??

Sorry bro.... I tried to talk myself out of it, but Im sleep deprived and feeling childish....

As soon as I posted that, I knew I would be in for at least one response like that. I was going to change how I worded it, but couldn't think of any other way. Oh well.

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

Maybe he never had a guitar with a bad nut? I had a PRS SE and I keep reading how great they are. Worst guitar I have had, the Pups were thin sounding, and the nut? I cant even stress how bad it stuck . I mean like a 1/4 step after every bend. I sent it back to PRS, they fixed it and were super nice, but why would someone chinch on a $10 nut and make it unplayable? Then I read they had a bad batch, blah blah and hear about the some problems years later. I dont get it, you see vids on the polish and all that on youtube, oh but sorry, guitar wont stay in tune. I dont mean a little either, it was so bad my wife could even hear it. I think that nut is a critical component to any good guitar. People change the tuners and I would say at least 90% of the time its that nut

+10

The nut is one of the most crucial elements of a guitar. It can make the difference between garbage and goodness.

Prolly not a better way. As I said, was overtired and feeling like a wise a--.. Sorry Bro..

Re: NGD (AGAIN)

Many years ago, I bought a cheap $149 squier strat. The plastic nut started crumbling apart. Dealer replaced it with a bone nut..
