NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

Re: NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

In a perfect world I'd like slightly taller frets and a slightly narrower nut width, but I've got no trouble getting around on this guitar.
Sounds like you ended up with a wide-thin Cu24? By the way, that looks like my ideal guitar...

Narrower and with bigger frets - that sounds like you'd like the DGT neck.

Precisely - it is a wide/thin neck.

I had the chance to play a DGT at the LA Amp show... AWESOME guitar. The neck seemed a little thicker back-to-front but the fret size and width were definitely working for me!

Re: NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

^ Me, I personally prefer a wide neck because all of my guitars have this nut width. (By wide, I mean the standard 1 11/16", not 1 3/4" like acoustics, and certainly not the ~1 4/5" that Gibson is forcing on the 2015s).

PRS Regular initially tripped me up. Funny thing is, I have smaller hands and actually prefer the narrow Jazz Bass neck over the wide Precision Bass neck. I also have trouble slinging my wider and thinner necked guitars low, so maybe a regular neck might fix that.

The used market better come through for me in a month's time, because at my price point new/NOS, I can't find Cu24/not-regular-neck/10-top/within a day's drive. Best I could get was 3 out of 4 - a McTrem 10-top/wide-fat, a Cu24 10-top/regular, and a Cu24 standard-top/wide-thin, all at stores slightly north of the DC area. If going used, I might drop the not-regular neck requirement if it's pre-'95, because I am not sure wide-thin existed back then. My expectations might not exactly be realistic...

I see plenty of CE24s on the used market, and the necks feel great, but I don't want a bolt-on.

EDIT: Actually went all the way across state lines to try the Cu24 standard-top/wide-thin. So glad I asked the store if they had a regular neck to compare it to. I actually prefer the standard neck now.

On paper, the wide-thin sounded like a perfect fit.

1-4/5? Holy crap really? For the electrics?

1-5/8 or 42mm if we're going metric always feels great to me. My main guitar is a Music Man Silhouette special - the neck measures .830 at the 1st fret and .900 at the 12th fret so it's slim but not a shred stick. I'll have to get some exact specs on my Cu24's neck to see how it compares.

I agree with you about the CE22s and 24s. The Maple bolt-on does feel good but it just doesn't sound right on that instrument.

Technically, it's 1 11/16" + 0.05" on each side to make room for the new adjustable brass nut. What's crazy is that the string spacing is the same. Honestly, if they couldn't fit it without widening the neck to wonky proportions, it wasn't ready for production.

I guess PRS's neck shape works better with a little extra thickness.

Now it's down to the McTrem 10-top and the Cu24 10-top...I like the McTrem's finish better and it's about $300 less, but I originally wanted a Cu24.

Re: NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

I like it just the way it is, or with tarnished nickel covers. The knobs are new, so they go with black or aged nickel.
It came with black knobs originally.

There's some PRS's that call for cream parts or zebra, but I wouldn't do it on that one. I'd stick with red and black or aged nickel.

I think aged/brushed nickel covers might be in order. I love that look I think it would make the guitar's top "pop" more - plus it kind of hides fingerprints.

You've got a PRS or two - what would you recommend? I'm thinking maybe a Brobucker in the bridge and something like a hot '59 flavored thing in the neck.

Re: NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

If I ordered a set for it, I'd do shop floor custom, which is the same price as normal Duncans. See if they can do Antiquity covers for it, without resorting to Custom Shop pricing.....since you're a long time forum member.

C/59 Hybrid/WLH neck.... 4 lead, aged nickel covers, magnet reversed in bridge pickup because of the PRS rotary knob. That would be my choice in a perfect world.

I've had 4 PRS guitars, and the HFS (Hot Fat Screams) bridge, and Vintage Bass PRS pickups are OK, but not as good as a killer Duncan set.

My McCarty with vintage set has Seths, which are great, but not modern tight.
My McCarty with C5/59 sounds heavy and tight, but I'd still move to the C/59 - WLH neck. It would be my step in the right direction for a rockin PRS.

Here's a pic of my long gone Whale Blue 10 Top Custom 24 with a very rare Hardtail Bridge. It also had the Regular Neck Carve which was the only thing I didn't quite get on with because of the narrower 1 5/8 nut width ( I'm a tall dude... 6'5 to be exact with big hands). If it had an Indian Rosewood Wide Fat Neck I never would have sold it. But in the end it helped pay off my wife's engagement ring.

Also the creme rings look better IMO then the black rings did on the Whale Blue...I think the Creme rings bring out the Natural Wood Binding, makes it pop. Plus Black Rings with Black Pickups on a Red Guitar just scream " I'm an Import " LOL...don't know why, it just does IMO.... If you're gonna keep the Black Rings then get the Nickel Covers, that will look sweet. But if you go Creme Rings get the Zebra's man!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA You're so right!!

My plan is to get pickup rings that are black chrome (rare I know but I think I can find 'em) or carved from ebony (those I know where to get) and get brushed nickel covers on whatever pickups I select.

That's a great looking blue Cu24, too. There's a Blue McCarty with moons and a hardtail that's for sale locally - I think I may go check it out oh hell here I go...

Thanks for the recommendation on the WLH neck. I was just thinking a '59 with an RCA5 and scatterwound might be the ticket but it sounds like Duncan had that same idea. So definitely that for the neck. I've tried the C/59 in a McCarty before and it was a bit on the bright side for me, but the C5 I wasn't thrilled with. I'm thinking a Brobucker might be the way to go.

You can't go wrong with a Brobucker in most guitars. I've got Brobuckers in a LP Std and a LP Custom.

Sweet - I'm looking for the ultimate hot PAF that can do heavy stuff but also sounds musical and toneful, and I've been told that's the way to go.

You can't go wrong with a custom shop PAF style pickup from Seymour Duncan. If it were my guitar I would call Jim Wagner at WCR pickups to see what he would recommend based on the guitar and the sounds you are going for. I think the following sets should would really well:

- Cherrybucker Set
- American Steele Set
- Some combination of Crossroads or Darkbursts

Re: NGD!! An unexpected opportunity! PRS content...

Regarding the pickups, I put a Brobucker in the bridge of mine and it lost that clinical almost sterile sound and now has a real PAF vibe with character.
