NGD - And my first ever LP

So in my nearly two decades of terrible 6-string slinging, I've never owned a Les Paul. I liked the sound of it, but the cost factor was always a deterrent for me. As I've gotten older, shinier toys have become more reachable, and a few months ago I looked at my collection and realized I had some pretty nice axes, and that the only thing missing was a good ol' fashioned USA LP.

One thing that's always put me off are glossy necks and wanted one with a satin finish. I nearly plopped for a Traditional Pro a few years ago, but nothing sang out to me of the ones I tried. Subsequently they've been discontinued, so I've kept an eye open for a 2nd hand one. That's until I spotted this: https://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson/Les-Paul-Classic-Satin-Limited-Edition-Electric-Guitar.gc

The entire guitar is gloss-less, and everything from the neck to the top is satin buttery smooth. Though the neck is advertised as 50s, it's somewhere between a 50's and 60's. I was keeping that model in the back pocket as a potential, then saw the entire 2019 Gibson line go up by $200+ for pretty much the same features as this year. So armed with a GC voucher, I nervously ordered the satin on a whim, hoping against hope I wasn't gonna get a dud being sight unseen.

Looks like my prayers were answered. Absolutely flawless construction, fit and finish superb, and the iced tea is a stunner. In a way I'm glad it doesn't have a flame top and the satin can be easily faded, cause it just screams 'play me hard'. And that rich LP sound and sustain is there in spades. And to top it all off, I ordered some Wolftetone Marshallheads in raw nickel (when I test drove the stock pickups I already knew I needed to change them out) during their sale and they arrived the same day!

Definitely recommend you try one if you haven't already!

That is a gorgeous axe. But those zebra's were made for that thing. Maybe not those per se, but zebra's look killer in there.

Wolfetones are a great move. My Wolfetone neck pickup is the best stock among a dozen neck pickups i have.

Re: NGD - And my first ever LP

L.Ps are by far and away the bestest. Well I figure so anyhow. Enjoy it.

Lol, don't make me regret my choice :)

Was going for a classic look but sounding like a PAF on steroids. Y'know, business in the front, party in the back type thing!

Very nice choice on the guitar and the pickups. Several people have recommended the Wolftones to me, so I'll have to check them out pretty soon. It's also nice when someone has a great LP experience. All we seem to hear about are the bad guitars that get out, but there are plenty of great ones too. If there weren't, it would be a poor experience just ordering online and getting whichever one they send you. I know that's what you did, so that says to me that there are likely more good LP's out there than bad. And the QC seems to be better. I have personally never had any QC issues over the 6 or so I've had over the past 15 years.

Congrats on a great looking and sounding LP.

Thanks for the kind words. And totally man, I think we, as consumers, just hear the horror stories on forums and chats. You rarely just hear someone posting just to praise. In my case, I thought its pertinent to throw a little goodwill out there. My Musicians Friend experience wasn't the absolute greatest, but I opened the guitar case and instantly felt there had been a lot of care and attention put into the guitar.

So what pickups came with?

Gibson 57 Classic and Super 57 in the bridge. To be fair the Super 57 isn't bad, but I was pretty disappointed with the neck pickup. A bit wooly, and for a neck pickup lacked some lower midrange and personality.

Re: NGD - And my first ever LP

I am not a big sunburst LP fan, but that one is amazing. I love that wood grain.

Re: NGD - And my first ever LP

Super awesome! Love it!

Enjoy for many many years to come....

Re: NGD - And my first ever LP

I played an Epi Tribute with the 57 set and they sounded awesome to me

I would probably lower the neck a bit to see if it got better

Other than that I probably would've just slid covers on the 57s and been done
Not even take out the pickups
Just push the cover on and put the strings back on

But it's yours
Let me know if you want to move one from the 57s

Re: NGD - And my first ever LP

I had a Traditional Pro 8 years ago (or so) and I never could find a set of pups I really liked in it. Damn shame, too, because it was also a nice plain top like yours.
