NGD...another Epiphone! Goldtop with a Bigsby

Was NOT in the market for another guitar, but I've always wanted a goldtop Les Paul with a Bigsby. This pic is of the actual guitar, but it is the ebay photo. I'll post some pics after I do the work I have planned. I put some D'addario 8.5s on it and it plays great. No dead frets or buzzing and I have the action set really low. The Bigsby stays in tune fine...as long as you don't USE it, lol. I'll use some nut sauce on it, and if that doesn't work, I've heard that getting a Tusq self lubing nut does the trick without trying all the other wacky stuff. Worse comes to worse, I just won't use the bar.

It is loaded with the Epiphone Probucker pickups which I always wanted to hear. Now I've heard them and I can't rip them out fast enough. Ungh. Terrible pickups IMO. The stock pickups in my Jackson Rhoads JS model are so much better. Played it at rehearsal on Thursday, then strapped on the Epi 60s Tribute with the Duncan Distortion and Jazz, and the difference was like night and day. When I first got it, played it against my 75 Custom with a Super Distortion/Jazz and again...night and day. Really wanted to like the probuckers, but nay nay. It will get "the treatment", which is new CTS pots, orange drops etc. Got another Super Distortion and an Eric Johnson neck pickup looking for a home, so in they'll go. I've got a custom shop set Custom Custom and APH neck, but they are only single conductor. Too bad cuz while they're gold covered, they're double black with two rows of gold screws and would look and sound sick in this guitar, but I want to split the pickups. Probably will have no complaints with the Super D and EJ neck as they both sound fantastic and split great...but I wanted to use those Duncans, hee hee.

I used to have an Epi with a Bigsby, and I ended up putting a locking bridge on it. The factory bridge would rock back and forth with the strings, and it would go out of tune. Keeping the moving parts of the Bigsby lubed was also a big help.

IMO, gold hardware on a Goldtop would be a wonderful emetic.

FYI, I think all of these LP's with open coil zebra PU's have a Probukcer bridge and an Alinco Classic Pro in the neck. The ACP's I've seen have been wound pretty hot.

Is this the traditional pro model?

Yes it is. The previous owner or previous, previous owner added the Bigsby. Good install, and luckily the bridge doesn't move with it. As long as I don't touch the Bigsby, it stays in tune nicely. But we'll fix that.

The neck pickup isn't bad. It has usable lead tones, but not great. For chords, it is muddy. I tried adjusting it for a little bit, but I stopped because I just knew I'd be swapping the pups.

Did you mean like a nice addition that will look good, or a nice addition that will make you vomit? Either way, I agree. :bigok:

I've been wanting one of the Epiphone 1956 Goldtops. That's the one that has the P-90's. I have set of Duncan P-90's that have been sitting in a parts drawer for years. I have never gotten to install them. But to be honest, look at my signature. I have so many guitars it's hard to justify another. But I don't have a guitar with P-90's. So eventually I hope to have one.

But I'm glad to see the one you got. That is nice. The Epiphone Les Paul that I have is not much to look at, as it's a plain top. But it plays so well. I didn't want to like it, but it just called to me. So I bought it even though I didn't exactly have the funds to spare at that time.

I have a feeling yours is like that. Plays great, and is just right. So have fun with her. Rock out, and rock on.

I have the same guitar! I love it to death. Bigsby looks awesome on it!
