NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

For quite a few years I've been toying with the idea of having a single pu guitar. I did look at Kramers for a while but they were quite pricey and wasn't a fan of the slightly gumby upper horn. So once I got on the Ibanez gravy train anew (thank the gods for MIJ) I looked at the 1986 models, specifically the RG410, the single hb model.

So, finally got one that came up. I've been working on it for the past month as I bought it just as neck and body, and had to fish around for hardware.

Usual Ibanez woods, Edge trem, push-push volume for coil cut. Yeah, I hate black but I hope to get it refin'ed sometime, some kind of loud red maybe.

The oil finished neck on these is great. It's a C shape with nicely tapering shoulders; not too dissimilar to a JS neck. Frets are jumbo but not huge.

Lucked out and found an '86 spec Edge in great nick. The PAF Pro sitting in my parts drawer also found a new home. I do have the original pu this would've come with but it's 12k triple ceramic, not interested.

Lots of swirling/scuffing on the body - it's been played a lot, but not much fret wear (don't think it's had a dress). The fingerboard has some pitting on the 2nd and 3rd frets too.

It sounds pretty good - has a nice throaty quality not unlike my '85 Roadstar. The PAF Pro seems quite balanced, with a bit of mid squawk the pu is known for, tight low, and bright top. I don't know if it'll stay there forever, but for now it's fine.

Neck still needs to settle - the truss-rod is fairly loose and there's a small amount of relief, bit more than two days ago when I strung her up, gods know how long she'd been sitting in pieces. Might also need to go up a string gauge - using 9s in Eb at the moment, very slinky, but feel that 10s might be the way to go in the end.

Still a few things to do: trim the locking nut bolts as they sit proud of the nut (a Gotoh 41mm, not the original Top Lok III), treble bleed on the volume, and a light fret dress. Pretty pleased though, a lot of fun to play - encourages experimentation with picking for dynamics and timbre colours because of the single pu, and the neck feels super.

Nice. I have a scruffy off-white example of the same model. As an experiment, I replaced the stock* pickup with an SH-4 JB. It sounded so good that it's staying there.

* CORRECTION - My example arrived sans the stock pickup. In an attempt to make it look like a Kramer Baretta, a previous owner had installed a cream/black MightyMite Motherbucker. That pickup went to Left_Hand_Strat.

Like a total cliché, I've been playing Eddie stuff on it and it screams, needs quite a light touch with the 9s in Eb.

FF: yeah I remember your white one. You got yours for a song, didn't you?

Lats: this guitar didn't come with a pu; the one I'm referring to is out of my Proline. Most of the superstratty Ibz (and some semis too) at this time came with the same pups - black plastic cover and base, with the guts epoxied inside. The bridge humbucker sounds pretty good actually - very punchy and tight, appropriate for harder music. While it's not a super hot wind, the magnets beef things up. Don't know what I'll do with it; have a couple of pups laying around...

Family shot (darn black!). The others are '85 RS525, and '86 PL1770 (the queen :)).

Wow, that's a great score! Nice family shot, too.

Any idea what the body is made of? I have a few Roadstars, and they vary greatly in weight and body construction. One of them is heavy as stone.

Great work for rehabbing it back from a pile of parts. Happy NRSD!

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

Congrats man.
Keep the 9s, Yngwie vibrato :D just go heavier on the wound strings.
Also, New Guitar Day threads, more New Amp Day threads :D

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

^^ Yeah there is that as well; 9-46 you reckon?

Only problem at the moment is that the top strings are being dampened slightly at the nut because the angle isn't quite right, but I need to cut down those bolts and lock everything down. The Gotoh nut isn't a perfect thing for this guitar - it's got a sharper angle, and is shallower (needs to be shimmed a lot)

*Sigh* would love a new amp too! MI Audio Iron Duke perhaps.

I liked the double post bring it back. The first one i looked at the guitars then the second the book shelf haha

And did you see what that charvel went for? $222

Sorry man :). The photo isn't great so you can't make out the titles; shelves go to the ceiling.

Great price on the Charvel.

It's definitely basswood - pale creamy/yellow colour, weighs nothing raw.

Hate it when a perfectly good axe gets parted out, but 'tis a happy day indeed. There's been a couple 410s on eBay lately - even a pink one :32:, but not for $400.

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

I ended up with one of those necks for a while, they were really comfy!!!

Later ended up w/the body, which was "Pepto Pink" re-finned,but the whole guitar was stolen...

That's awesome man! Classy as hell despite the blacl. Apart from the Artist series these are my fav Ibanez'.

Did you see the pink one at the Swoppy the other day? I would've loved to have snatched it but it was in 'n out damn quick

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

I remember when you could buy them super cheap because of that ugly headstock.

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

^^ Eh, I like the headstock :P.

Hmm, seems to be gone now. But there's still a salmon pink RS410, and a black/magenta burst RG410, both well priced :).

Eh, don't start with the Artists; if there was a LP style axe I wanted in my arsenal...

Haven't been on the site for a while, so I didn't see it. I just looked now and they have a nice '90s S540.

I know you're an Eddie fan, so I'd recommend one of these. I should note that the trem on these doesn't rest on the body - the baseplate shape and spring retainer for fine tuners don't allow for it, but you could easily stick a piece of wood inside the trem cavity (about 3mm) so the block rests on it in neutral position.

Re: NGD: Ashurbanipal's old Ibanez fever continues

I don't mind that headstock, but for some reason I prefer it in a natural finish:
