NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
NGD: Bernie Rico content…

So I've got an 80's Hair Metal cover band. I'm in a pawn shop and see this for a hunnerd bones. I figure I can easily find a place for it in the lineup…

IMG_1491.jpg

What do think I should do? It's a Platinum series.
- Painted neck
- "fake" Khaler
- Missing the locking nut screws at the top (if that is what they are)
- Fine adjusters work
- missing the bar

I'm not sure if I want to really juice it up and add phase switches, tone-o-magic and all the usual BC wiring….

Or go trash with it and pull EVERYTHING, leave the holes, and go 1 bucker, volume, and Bettie Page Devil stickers….

All suggestions welcome.

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Go all out... get everything you can squeeze into it!

...including the stickers!

Why not?

Stickers for sure! You may just fall in love with that little axe, they tend to play rather well.

You may just need this.

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Mine is similar. Where do those locking-nut screws go?

Anyway, is that 2-knobs/2-switches, or 1-knob/3-switches?

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Dude, that is no turd so polish away. Nice score for a Benji man.

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Two Knob, Two Switches.

And all in all, those Paltinums, short of the cheesy terms, are pretty solid guitars.

So you say pimp hard either way?

I'm feeling the SuperD here….(see Pickup Lounge)

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

SuperD would work, is this going to be your Crue guitar? I could see that rockin' out some Crue. I say pimp it for sure.

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Absolutely the Crue axe.

just need to pick some pickup….
Maybe find a whammy (gonna set it all the way down hard

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

I say 1 pup and 1 volume control but get some bright pinks, greens and yellows on there somehow! :D

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

I had the Mockingbird version for a backup in the 80s. Slapped a 500XL in it and I was good to go. Those guitars can be setup as players. Nice score Bob.

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

Cleaning it up at the moment. It's a right solid guitar. Ahhhh - the days before eBay when many a righteous axe could be purchased for mere pennies on the dollar and a little elbow grease….

Does that locking nut looking thing actually DO anything???? I can't see how it actually works? Is it just for looks and giggles?

I'm gonna shim the neck with a dime maybe….

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

I was considering Black electrical for something somewhere….

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

I had the pearl white version of that guitar when I was in 7th grade. Learn't a lot of riffs on that thing. Mine was plywood, there are some that were not plywood. Check if yours is. It's easy to tell the layers stand out like a sore thumb in the cavities.

If it's plywood, it could influence your pickup choice. The electronics cavity is pretty small, not much room for more switches/pots without routing and making a new plate.

The trem route is huge on that. So putting a Floyd is possible but it won't cover up the hole in the body. The only trem I found to cover it was the Kahler Killer. A top-mount Kahler would cover too, but in both cases you'll have the old stud anchors showing.

The arm, if I remember correctly is a very standard, common screw-in import. The lock nut does work, but if you've lost the Allen bolts you've probably also lost the locking pads. Trouble is, it's incredibly worse if you leave it loose or remove the lock nut altogether, because of the angled string spread. A Kahler behind-the-nut lock is a suitable replacement.

Oh yeah and the pickup routes (if it's like mine) are big on the bass side for double screws, but tiny on the treble side. So you can't fit a Duncan or PAF style in there without nipping off the tabs. Dimarzios fit just fine. Anything with a triangle ear.

What else you want to know?

Re: NGD: Bernie Rico content…

How many chics did that killer axe in Pear White score you in 7th grade?

Seriously - thanks Frank!

I was wondering about the term arm….

I guess it'll be a Red/Black SuperD! Or maybe two….
