NGD, but I have a problem, it stinks like a sweaty armpit.

I picked up an Ibanez SZ520 last night. Nice guitar, and I'm happy with it, but it smells like a sweaty armpit. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that after it was too late. Any suggestions?

I read something about using vinegar, but that stuff is acidic and I'm not so sure I want to risk the finish with it. If I just polish it alot, will that help?

Maybe try dryer sheets in the guitar case with it for a few days. That should take it out.

Oh and I love the 520's. I had a couple of 320's back in the day but always loved that blue with the squid on the 12th fret.

Definitely would not use vinegar personally.

I would first use a lightly damp wash cloth and then some sort of polish such as this one (I use it, very good product IMO.)

Using WD-40 on the hardware will clean up any grime and also help with the smell.

Lemon oil on the fretboard will help condition the board and definitely help with the smell.

EDIT: Congrats on the new guitar!

Is there a spot where its stronger
I would think the bridge is the culprit
Lingering oils and such in the crevices

I had cases before that smelled like catpee and therefore the guitar smelled like that too .... terrible I tell you, I sadly haven't found a way to get rid of it, would be interested in it. I sprayed the case with fabric smell removal stuff and left it open for a couple days, didn't really work.

It's not the bridge. It's definitely the body, mostly where a guy's torso and forearm would be in contact.

If the smell is from body oils, then a degreasing cleaner such as dish soap would likely do the best job of removing them. I personally love a cleaner called Simple Green. Dilute in water, nice smell, good cleaner. Undiluted, strong enough to degrease an engine, diluted, mild enough to clean a leather dashboard and seats.

trust me. ain't nothing gonna get rid of a saturated stink. i tried everything under the sun. sell it to kramersteen- he can't smell it anyway.

well i triedon a guitar case, but i doubt a guitar or anything would be different.

Oh well, I'll keep it and maybe use the smell as an excuse to sand off the tinted clear coat and do a proper dye job. The tinted clear that they used makes the quilted figuring look more like unevenly applied stain than actual figuring.

I bet the bridge pickup is as bad as any of it. You could probably get pretty aggressive with the cleaning since they are sealed and epoxy potted.

I'd start by hosing the body down with Windex and lots of 100% cotton flannel -- white, so that you can see what comes off of it.

Stick it in the case with an open box of baking soda in there too.

I have a guitar that just smells, old.. Ive aired the case out and its better, but still trying to defunk it.

It's a urethane finish you're not likely to damage with vinegar but still try a good cleaning and polish with something like Virtuoso

I got a sweater for my birthday

Would have preferred a groaner or a screamer though.

Sorry, couldn't help it!

Try scattering some baking powder ... Bicarbonate of Soda ... in the case, and shut the guitar in there for a day or so. Then take the guitar out, vaccuum the case and clean the guitar. Bicarb absorbs the smells.
