NGD - cheap SG copy

Re: NGD - cheap SG copy

still looks neat. who woulda thunk?

I recently played an SG junior at sam ash - I really dug it (much better than the LP junior). Price tag was on the high side for what I perceived to be a budget/bare bones guitar ($850!).

Simple neck dive solution = fishing weights in a zip-lock bag taped to the inside wall of the control cavity. No more neck dive. And yes, I'm being serious.

Re: NGD - cheap SG copy

I always hear this theroy of SGs being neck heavy. How can 1 1/2 pounds of neck be heavier than 6 pounds of body? The problem on these style SGs (early 60s style) is the position of the strap button. This is why Iommi moves it to the top horn. SG standards with the longer heel/neck joint are very well balanced due to the strap button being about an inch and a half higher (closer to the headstock). So if neckdive is a big problem for you, move that strap button.

I ended up moving the bottom strap button away from the pots and that helped quite a bit with the neck dive. The other thing i noticed is the position of the neck strap button allows the guitar to rotate very easily which also contributes to the problem. What i would need is a small steel block so i could mount the strap button perpendicular to the neck as i really don't want to drill into the top horn.

The Iommi pickups are something. Very unique sound. I reccomend using 500K pots on them or they sound kinda bad. You will definitely get the Sabbath sound from them, even though I bet those single coils do Sabbath pretty good too.

yes indeed, i like the Iommis. I read a review that claimed they don't have a usable clean tone but that is not the case. I do have 500k pots but i may try 1meg pots for the neck pickup somewhere down the line.
