NGD - Ed

Re: NGD - Ed

I'm not into LPs, but the old P90/Staple Customs are sweet, wouldn't turn one down! Prefer the more bity, raunchier tone.

Now you just need a staple pu in the neck ;).

Re: NGD - Ed

Their gloss finish is much nicer than the horrendous "lacquer taste" finish I had on mine...lacquer over poly. Thickest finish I have ever seen and the guitar was incredibly muddy.

They are very well built though. Great players. I would like to have one of their lacquer only aged versions.

Re: NGD - Ed

that's what the lacquer taste is? weird

I am dying to try out something from the Navigator line now

Re: NGD - Ed

Cool guitar. It's ironic that the pickups are better than what comes in a $3500 Gibson version.

Staples have a unique look and sound, but I wouldn't change anything. Duncan P-90's sound great. I love the P-90 neck into a blackface Fender.....just a beautiful tone.

Re: NGD - Ed

Used it for rehearsal last night, thing's got a ton of low end. The upper mids and top end aren't quite what I am used to, might be a pup swap but I'm not sure. Sounded real good with the band though

Welcome to p90s :)

Re: NGD - Ed

If by chance the volume pots are 300K, swap them out for 500K but leave the tone pots what they are. I did that to the SG Classic I had with a P-90's. Had a similar sound to what you are describing. The 500K volume pots opened them right up.

Re: NGD - Ed

when you say "arent what im used to" what do you mean? too bright? too strident?

Re: NGD - Ed

They were a bit mellower or softer. I was running thru my AD30 and I got some of it back opening up the mid and treble controls but I need to bring the Dual Terror down to practice and see how it is with that. I expected a little more cut than I was getting. It wasn't bad and I certainly don't need every guitar to sound the same so we'll see.

Re: NGD - Ed

IMO, Gibson is still doing a good job with their P90s. The vintage style Duncans I have tried are too mellow and don't sound "right" to me. I say this having a 1954 P90 in the guitar I grew up playing which my brother still owns. The modern Gibson p90s are not as sweet but they still have decent "bark" when you jack 'em up.

That said, For what Gibson charges aftermarket, I would probably go with Lollar or Fralin, etc.
