NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

And boy am I a believer now! Jeez. I picked this '66 Gibson ES 335 12 String for a good deal since it had a stoptail conversion (could have been done better) and the hardware had been changed. I'm going to stop flipping gear soon and this is one of my last purchases. Someone in the booth was pretty liberal that day. It's marked as a 2nd and I believe it's due to the dark spots with the cherry sunburst. She's aged well. Tons of vertical checking. Honest play wear.

Unplugged, the acoustic resonance is pretty insane. It is louder than a semi hollow guitar w/ wraparound bridge that I have at the moment. Definitely night and day between my nephews Chibson 335. It plays okay, but sounds "plinky" unplugged. She has a pronounced round bass/woody/ open tone. Not as focused (attack) as my R8, but a welcomed change. The responsiveness when playing is the most enjoyable part of playing this guitar. Something only my Koa 356 (upcoming NGD thread) can mimic.

I peeked under the hood and can see the original Sprague black beauty caps. Patent # pickups, more than likely T Tops, but I'd have to remove the covers to be sure. Neck pickup is airy and has warmth to it when played clean. Bridge pickup can really hang in there when played with dirt. Playing Zeppelin riffs with the right setting is all Page in spades.

As far as the, neck width. It's definitely on the smaller size. I believe it's 1-9/16". It doesn't bother me much. Every guitar has it quirks and I like to work around them. Playing this with 12 string might prove to be tricky tho. I currently have it strung with Dunlop Heavy Core 10-48s. No issues at all other than a minor setup.

Might add a new nut if I decide to keep it with 6 strings, but will give it a go with a proper 12 string setup. Switched out the abr and stoptail for some spare Gibson parts I had. It came with an old Gibson bridge and import tailpiece. Will have to switch out the thumbwheels and bridge bushings on the next string change. All in all, a fun guitar to play. She's a player for sure. Having the old wood and pickups is the cherry on top.

She is a beauty!A sacrifice from the conversion from 12 string to six to see the low E lopsided off the end of the fretboard, but a sacrifice I would willingly make for that vintage guitar.

Wow, that is certainly a unique conversion. I bet they didn't make many 12 strings that year.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Sweet guitar
I have been wanting a 12 string
Drooling mostly

On another note
I just don't understand anyone getting a Chibson 335 when there are so many Epiphone already out there
Most of the inexpensive Asian guitars I have seen needed a good bit of work to be playable.

Epis just need to be tuned to pitch

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Thanks guys. I dig how *the red is fading into a dark color. Kinda like a bourbon burst. The way the owner had it setup made no sense. It had two strings per hole in the tailpiece. It seemed iffy, so I went with 6 strings instead. I'll have to hunt down a 12 string trapeze to do a proper setup. For some reason, the abr it had was also gold.

Off topic, but still a "335" haha. Yeah, I told him the same. I've had a couple of Chibson. Just something he had to learn the hard way I suppose. He wanted a Dave Grohl 335 really bad tho. Goes well with his black Epiphone LP. Both are loaded with Duncans.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Beautiful .... I know a 6 string is an every day player but I’d get that back to 12 strings. It’s the real deal though, congrats!

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Sweet. Until this point, I didn’t even know there’d been 12 string 335s. Lovely burst.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Sweet! I'd wanna play it way too often and bend too many strings to have it as a 12.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

That is what happens with good wood, real lacquer, and time.

That is a freaking cool axe!

Part of me says: Keep that as is so it can go BACK to 12 string if someone ever wants to. (pull the stop, plug the holes, swap the bridge and add tailpiece to strap button, done). Someone will REALLY dig that $$$

And another, darker, evil part of me says: Saw the logo top off, remove the tuners, add the requisite 3 per side in grover, cut a chunk out, glue logo top back and it's turn to the Six Side will be complete!

Or - just leave it. Your axe your call. Any way you go, haters. Sweet sweet 335 though!!!!!

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

^^ I actually did think about that. I'll have to at least try it with a proper 12 string setup first before I look into it more seriously. The smaller nut width might make it impractical to keep it as a 12 string. I dig the big funky headstock tho. May end up with a new bone nut and call it a day.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

I'd try using every other tuner, decrease the angle behind the nut and probably improve tuning stability.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

Tuning stability is actually pretty good with the strings that close. I might try your suggestion in the future.

Hey, off topic, but is that an Ibanez Fireman in your profile pic? Looked like it has Tele drive train, though (I didn’t think they’d done that)?

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

It's a custom build, but it's based off an Ibanez Fireman. I requested a Tele setup to mix things up.

Re: NGD: Entered the 335 brotherhood

OP: what's the neck's width at the nut of the 335?

Inquiring minds would like to know.
