NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

Nice score. I've just become reacquainted with my own EPI LP. Consider the PATB pups. I love mine.

Enjoy.

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

I really agree with the OP about the quality of Epis these days. To be fair I didn't have a lot of experience with them in the past, but this Tuesday I went to my local L&M. I tried 3 Epi LP's ranging from 400-600 dollars (CDN). The finish and fretwork on all of them was outstanding. One of them was "ferrari red". OMFG! I'd kill for a gibson in that colour! Another had sort of a satin/oiled neck and back. Felt really nice, not "thick poly" at all. I really thought that was a great compromise between affordable finish and feel.

The new probuckers sounded pretty good too. However, I was playing through a pretty amazing Princeton re-issue, so it would have been pretty tough to sound bad. But I think the new PU's are much better than the old.

All in all, for $500, how can you complain?

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

Doc it was too good to pass up. I went to look at a few used pieces and walked off with the Epi.

The board and binding aren't real issues to me and I'll guess most folks wouldn't notice so much especially on a new guitar but a/b-ing with my #1 I wanted to make it have a more worn in feel. I've had more than one new guitar that needed to have the board sanded or steel wooled down a bit.

I have a bunch of pickups here I can mess with inc. an old L500 but again no rush. I would like to try the Whole Lotta set at some point though if not in this guitar one of my others. Soon as I picked this guitar up it reminded me of old Aerosmith/Joe Perry which is so far up there for me it isn't funny so if it stays just like that I'm golden. This thing really fights outside of it's class.

Yeah, I bet that Whole Lotta set would be absolute perfection in that guitar. I haven't tried them yet, but from all the comments I have read about them, I would love to find a guitar to put them in and take it for a whirl.

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

So I'm getting a bit closer to swapping the stock pups out. Sonically they're still pretty good but when the volume is at band level the pups are kind of noisy, a bit too noisy for me. I might pot them and see how they fair we'll see.

Very nice, I'd take it with these knobs

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

Congrats on finding a good epiphone! I work at GC and I can't say I've seen any increase in quality from epiphone. We get a lot of those in and I'd say the same thing about them as I say about kids, cats, and subway sandwiches: about one in four is cool. When you find a good one they're great! But you'll have to go through three or so that play and feel like doo doo. The fretboards and frets feel like sandpaper some times.

HAte to agree with Drex. Back In Black, speed knobs also.

Now that's what I'm talking about right there..... 😎 Black LPs with binding are pretty sharp IMO. 😀

The fretboards and frets feel like sandpaper some times.

3 out 5 of the Epis I've bought recently had rough frets, very noisy when doing string bends and likely to cause the frets to wear out faster. Even $60 First Act gutiars at the toy store don't have such rough frets, I don't get it, do they do this on purpose? Anyway, it's really easy to fix while doing the initial string replacement, using micromesh pads, or steel wool, or whatever to polish out the roughness and make them look as lustrous as new frets should.

Re: NGD - Epi LP Traditional Pro

I imagine it's because it has to be done by hand.

I've had 2 Gibsons that needed the boards sanded down, both Melody Makers. I'm sure they were keeping production costs down as much as possible.

On mine the frets were polished but the board could've been smoother for sure. With everything else the guitar had going for it and at that price point it is a non-issue to me.
