Went in to GC looking to see if they had classic vibe teles left, I heard that they were discontinued (when though? I'm late to the boat on that one!). No they did not have one, so I browsed...
Found some MIM standard butterscotch ash teles, but the action and intonation were screwed up so I didn't bother.
I was on my way out, dissapointed (also because they sold the only non-cobain mustang they had) when a sunburst Highway 1 tele caught my eye. 2006 serial, but almost NO play wear on it! It's like factory fresh except for some pickguard wear. Someone really babied their guitar. I'll never know why they sold it, but either they just don't like telecasters or they like teles so much that they had to trade up to AVRI or something.
Plugged it into a JVM410 with the 12t75 cab and rocked out for a few, and also tried it on an HRDx. Sounds like it should, given the hot pickups, and in fact I like the fender hot alnico III pickup a lot more than when I had a HWY1 for a month back in 2007. Good harmonics through those JVM lead channels... Which sucks because now I know I need a JVM! That thing sounds great, it was my first time playing one but I felt pretty at home after getting to know the DSL50 so well.
I used to hate the highway 1 big frets, now when I play them I don't think about it, I just play, and the notes come out and I feel good.
Anyways GC had just bought the guitar yesterday, they had to call someone for like 15 minutes to get the 15 day hold off the guitar. I'm glad I got there today, I feel like this thing would have been gone pretty quick.
I got a decent price given the fantastic condition for a Highway 1 (those wear very easily!) and the fact that it was guitar center. with a new fender gig bag it was $520+tax. I feel good knowing I didn't spend more for an Am special, or spend the same and only getting a MIM std...
Taking pics soon... forgot to go buy smokes on the way home. still working on a name.
