NGD-first in quite some time...

formula73

INTENSELY corrosive sweat
Dean Czech Korina Z. Stop laughing...despite the unrepentant rape of Dime's name, they actually made/still make top shelf stuff.

The burst is GLORIOUSLY hideous, in person, but fear not, this is the only burst Czech Z to see the light of day. After a few tweaks and a little bit of adjustment, it plays and sounds great. The black mung on the frets resisted like a housecat in a bath, but they did come clean. The stock, locally-built (local to Czechoslovakia lol)pickups are surprisingly good for 14-15k winds with oversized poles, brass baseplates, and ceramic magnets. I like these things but I had some leftover Detonator poles laying around, so I tossed them in for ****s and giggles after I potted them. I figured a little more focus on the bridge/neck coils might be beneficial. Since they're not position-specific, I ended up dropping the neck way down to compensate for the vibration. There are lower wound neck pups out there but this didn't come that way.

For those of you who don't know/remember, the Czech builds are fantastic. They were a fairly short run over just a few years, so if you pick one up, it really is a rarity. The archtops had THICK figured maple caps over 2pc real mahogany backs and the Korinas were top-quality white limba. All had ebony boards, as far as I know, and full Schaller hardware.

The factory wiring is super clean, but...

Ever notice there are some guitars where the tone stays true when you roll off the volume and there are others that lose high end? You can do the treble bleed mod with a cap and resistor per volume pot OR the old 50s Gibson wiring. Here's factory:

Here's what you need to do:

And here's what it looks like, now. I probably should have insulated the cap leads but I don't figure it's exactly flopping around:

Let me be the first to say I hope you die. When you do please leave me that guitar.

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

Well, I like him. Seems fair.

I just don't want to die yet, and if I do, he still can't have it.

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

Totally dig it, those pups would be somewhere else thought. Enjoy the heck out of it

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

I just figured I'd give them a chance. I remember liking them back in the day, even if they were screechy and unpotted. The poles...well...I just wanted to see what it would do. I may yet put the stock screws back in. I wish the neck was a little less powerful but I hardly use it, anyway.

Best thing about these is that you can generally find the Caddys or Evos for <$500 and they are on par or better than golden age MIJ stuff. This isn't some 'Korina' Epi, with a 7 pc white mystery wood body with front and back veneers, this is 2 pcs of quality white limba.

Ironically enough, given my Epi reference, this same factory actually did build some *****in Epi LP Standards for the EU market. I always wished I could find one!

I bet the Fralin Metal Set I put in the B. C. Rich would scream in that guitar.

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

That's WAY too spendy for me, lol

...but if you want to just GIVE them to me, I'd be happy to throw them in and post a crappy video or two.

Really nice guitar, I did not know any of these were made in CZ? If I had it I would have done exactly as you have with it,pretty much just leave it alone, with the exception of a few minor mods. Congrats on your find!!!

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

The original Deans from the '70s were just outstanding, and I've heard great things about the Czech guitars too.

That one is beautiful! Congrats. Please put me in line for your estate, too! :)

(FWIW, my favorite pickup in an Explorer body is the Seth Lover, but I realize I'm old school.)

Enjoy!

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

I've admitted this to some people: I like everything. I like X2Ns and Motherbuckers and 59s and Phat Staples. I can always find a tone I can use. That said, it may soon be seeing a swap to a set of Super 70s that I've had in all kinds of guitars and always stick around after the geets are gone.

I've had several old Deans but they've all moved on for no reason, really. My favorites were an 80 ML and 82 V.

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

Czech Z's are the bomb man!!! I'm a little bit jealous over here.... not kidding either.

Re: NGD-first in quite some time...

Thanks, guys. I forgot how good these things were. Even the stock pickups (ok, with the poles I put in there...) are good enough to stay in, at least for a while. I can't hate!
