NGD!! First Warmoth Build + Questions for The Guitar Building Experts

Re: NGD!! First Warmoth Build + Questions for The Guitar Building Experts

The white knobs aren't going to stay, by the way, unless someone can tell me an easy way to age them to match.

Toss them in a cup of coffee and bring it to a boil in the microwave. Repeat process until the desired color is achieved. If you need to get a more yellowish color, add a little turmeric to the coffee. I've aged parts all the way from white to cream like this with good results.

Hmm, I have a few spare knobs laying around. I'll try it and report back on the results. Thanks.

Very Nice. I like seeing builds. If Iam not wrong, I think many guitar polish contain carnauba wax. Also the caps in the 'TONE' define how much treble you can roll of with your turn the tone control and not not to keep them from losiing tone. The higher the value the more treble roll off as you turn it down, However caps are also used in Volume controls as a treble bleed to keep them from losing tone when you turn them down.

I listened, and I checked the compound I've been using an it's Meguiars. I tried it on a small area of the neck, but it lost the shine after a few minutes. I think I need something more of a wax or oil perhaps.

Is that meguiars a cutting compound or polish?
Use cutting compound with a slightly damp rag in very small amounts. You have to essentially burnish the finish so it will take some effort.

It just says Carnauba wax. A friend of mine who is a guitar tech uses it to clean and polish guitars. What about an oil of some kind? I have some good quality lemon oil, but the things people say about it on the Internet is conflicting. Manufacturers like Music Man and PRS suggest it, but there are some people who even say it actually prevents wood from being protected against weathering. I also have some fretboard conditioner. Could that work for the whole neck?

No wax wont work to any great extent, wax is the very last thing you use. IMO if you want a nice gloss/shine you need a cutting compound to burnish the neck back first then you can proceed to polish then finally wax.

Go to an auto parts store and get some Meguiers Ultimate Compound and a micro fiber towl. Just work it by hand. It will shine it up. Then put on some wax if you want.

Nice build.

^^ listen to him

The screw holes weren't pre-drilled cause not all tuning pegs have their screw holes located in the same position. My Sperzel locking tuners don't even use screws, but some kind of poles hidden underneath the tuners and buried into the wood, making the tuners look screwless.

LOOKS GOOD man! The color of the frets could be either finish on them or they used EVO wire. The frets can feel smaller on a finished FB neck compared to a non finished FB neck do to them being finished usually after (if not always after) the fret job.

Well when you buy a guitar body and also have a bridge on order, they give you the option of installing the studs. Since I ordered the tuners and all other components from them, you would think that they would drill the holes since the tuners they sell have the screw holes and come with the screws. I have the exact same Schaller locking tuners on other guitars that don't have the screw hole built on them. It's just kind of an oversight on their part as far as I'm concerned.

After going back and scrubbing the frets again with steel wool, the color is more silver but still a slight brass tinge. Either way the fretwire feels great to play on and should last a very long time so I'm happy with that. I like having different color fret wire. I wish I could have gotten a blueish color so it would match with the body.

Yes, coffee for the dials to age them. Check my recent strat thread to see how mine turned out.

The guitar looks great by the way. Love the cream pickups and pickup choice. Big thumbs up!

Re: NGD!! First Warmoth Build + Questions for The Guitar Building Experts

Well like I was saying before, I used steel wool to smooth and polish my frets but the color hasn't changed. I was pretty thorough, but I'll give it another scrub and see if maybe I didn't get it all.

You'd have to steel wool the **** out of it to get that finish off. I literally had to chip away at it with an xacto knife!
