"not too crazy about the stock pups (kind of muddy)"
I was kind of befuddled by the combo of the Alnico 2 490 in the neck, which was Vintage LP sounding but muddy and the Alnico 5 498 in the bridge which was screaming cut through tone.
I toyed w/pickup height, etc. until I got them to a point that they were less of a drastically noticeable leap between the two when switching and they both were in what I thought was the "sweet spot" for each pickup, but they are definitely polar opposites in tone.
I am sure that a pair of Seths, Pearlys or '59s would def. be an improvement on a great looking and playing guitar.
