I traded a LTD V i never played for this black MIM Strat. I changed the pickups to Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge and a APS-1 pickup in the neck. Kept the middle stock, but pulled the ceramic magnet and the slugs and replaced them with Alnico Rods. Then I threw on a black pickguard I had laying around and Gilmourized it. The Seymour Duncan pups sound fantastic, especially the bridge one. Its actually pretty gnarly and handles high gain really well. I always use a single coil for our final song in the set and our cover of Paranoid. The neck is great for really mellow cleans, especially when I have the tone set to around 5 and the volume around 8. They both pair well with the bastardized stock pickup in the middle incredibly well.

Nice. I think the same thing every time I see a black/maple strat......it needs a black guard.

For some reason, I've never owned an SSL-5, yet always wanted one.

Very nice! Now when you say "Gilmourized" do you mean cosmetically or electrically?

Time to become comfortably numb!

P.S.: ...and shouldn't that be spelled "Gilmourised?" :)

That's a great looking Strat, love the Gilmour look. I have a SSL5 in the bridge of my Legacy along with a SSL1 in the middle and a Custom Surfer in the neck. The SSL5 is a great over wound pick up, great choice.

Mostly cosmetically, but I beleive he does use a pickup the SSL5 is based on, so I got that one right at least.

How much difference was there after putting in the rods ?

For the middle it did make a pretty big difference I thought, for cleans I really like the voicing.

When I bought the thing I originally had the rods in the bridge and it really smoothed it out and added some weight. However there is no comparison between the SSL5, it just has way more grit and punch.

I did the same trick to a Tele standard pickup and it made the pickup awesome. So I guess it depends on the sound you're going for.

The Gilmour strat uses a Fender Fat 50's in the neck, a Fender CS '69 in the middle and a Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge. He also has that small mini-switch between the knobs and the 5-way for adding the bridge pickup to any switch position. Very cool mod.

I'm big on pole magnets especially for a neck pup. I stick them in humbuckers.
