NGD: Hamer EchoTone

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

I'd say the neck is a medium chunky profile. It's not a 50's fat and not a 60's thin, somewhere in between. It reminds me a lot of the profile on the SG Classic, just not quite as round. The frets are medium jumbo. I think the prev owner had them dressed and a new nut installed. It plays like butter.

TWo hundred? Shweeeeeeeet!

I have played Gene's and it is fantastic. I so need a Semi Hollow. First - gotta get the rest of the herd up to top form!

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

I got one just like it (except in a sunburst finish) last year around March. I was curious if those DD's are stock. Do you mind telling me what model they are if you ever get around to pulling them out?

Duncan Designed HB's were stock in the Korean models, not sure which ones. That changed when production shifted to China in the early/mid 2000's, and the PU covers on those say 'Hamer.'

Mine was used and it says Duncan Designed on the covers as well. I was replacing the nut, and curiosity got the better of me, and I took the pickups out, and found out they were Duncan Designed Hb-103's which are the Duncan Distortions. It seems weird that they put those in a hollowbody, so if he had them in his Hamer, then I would assume they were stock

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

I'll find out what these are in mine and post in this thread. The strings on it are brand new. I swear the prev owner had a pro setup done on it recently. It just plays so sweet.

Some of the PU's spec'd out for guitars is just plain weird. I've seen full-hollowbody Ibanez guitars with stock ceramic HB's.

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

In the super deluxe Hamer USA Monoco Super Pro, Hamer used a 14.4K Duncan Custom (ceramic) for the neck pickup and a 14.4K Custom Custom for the bridge pickup, custom made by Duncan with single conductor cable and with nickel covers. Don't know what they were thinking with that one either.

It's a pity Hamer went out of business...wish they'd asked me for advice. :)

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

I used the wayback machine to check specs o these from 10 years ago. Unfortunately no word on which DD they are, but in all the years I checked from 2K to 2K6, all denoted gibson scale.

You owe me a clip, I posted one of my 335 right quick, so get on the ball ;)

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

I can't find any specs on them either, other than the last bit on Hamer's site but that's for the Indonesian and Chinese models (only found through Google search). A few places have said the Korean models are 25 1/4" scale, not 25 1/2" or 24 3/4".

I do believe the knobs are aftermarket and not stock. Every pic of the Korean made models I've seen have had solid black knobs, not the ones with silver inserts. I might swap the pickup rings back to black along with the switch tip.

I'll have a clip up soon. I want to make one playing it through my amp. Just a matter of having the time to drag it out and set it up.

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

This weekend I swapped out the electronics (except the switch, it's actually pretty solid and works well). The pots are DiMarzio 500k's (thanks TGWIF for the recommendation) and a switchcraft jack. The wiring in there was quite a mess. Gotta give the Korean makers props for using shielded 2-conductor cable. Rather than reuse that stuff, I opted to rewire with new. I had to pull the bridge pickup and fix a rather shotty repaired lead extension so that gave me a chance to see which Duncan Designed model is in there. It is in fact a HB-103B so I'm assuming the neck is the HB-103N. I really like them. They have a nice clear tone. They're not as hot as the Seymour Duncan Distortions and that's fine with me. I can live with these until I can swing a set of '59's, or maybe a '59N/Brobucker combo.

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

Better taper on the pots, the most obvious right away. Definitely clearer too. Better, no doubt.

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

Hey. Nice guitar for the money. I got one right before Xmas. If you go to the Hamer site, it explains how they match the pots to the pick-ups. It seems to be part of the design, so you may want to leave them. On mine, it looks like someone changed the machine heads. What I have now are gold plated Grovers. But not the nice ones, you can see the gears in the back. Yours looks much nicer. It does stay in tune, so that's good.

Re: NGD: Hamer EchoTone

Getting back to the string alignment, the low E string seems further from the edge of the fingerboard than the high E does from the other edge. How do things look at the nut?

NGD: Hamer EchoTone

Those pots were change a while ago. And for the better too.

Funkfingers: you nailed it. I looked at the nut. The spacing is off just a bit on the E A D strings. I'm not gonna worry about it right now. It plays and sounds fine. Maybe when I get some time to sit and tweak my guitars I'll address it.
