NGD - Happy 4th! It's American.

My Les Paul GAS started less than a week ago and culminated into this. I regret nothing! 1978 Les Paul Standard Tobacco Burst with Shaw pickups (someone replaced the original t tops with shaws). Bonus? I'm not sure. The neck shaw is fantastic, the bridge shaw is packaged up in the case and currently a 59 sh-1n is in the bridge. Pretty bright, yes, but sounds pretty awesome still. Ok here are the pics:

White spacers, some metal things on the side, and a rough unoriented a5. I'm going to put this in the bridge. The shop never got around to putting it back in the bridge, they had to repair the pickup and had put the 59 in bridge in the meanwhile.

Re: NGD - Happy 4th! It's American.

Shaws are my fave PAF types outside of real PAFs and some Pat#.when it comes to Gibson proper(I do like my Slashers a bit more though than Shaws..honestly,.they share some big similarities)

They are not high output...not much more than a T top. But they do sound a bit creamier.

Beauty of a Paula! That late 60s and 1970s TSB has become my new fave color for Gibsons over the years. Congrats!!

Nice. In fact, pretty much one of the few best Les Pauls Ive ever seen here on Sdugf basically. Not sure if you know what you have, or if you just hit the jackpot. Thats all I got.
That having been said, I hate to bring you down but those probbaly arent TIm Shaws. Shaws wrere made from 80 to 85, and even if they have both the stamp ands the engraved serial numbers, and the without the original Patent Applied For sticker, they are probably undifferentiated pre Gibson 490's,57 Classics, or Burstbuckers.

Awesome!! Congrats!!! Zero to holy cow in just over a week!! Im not used to seeing the inside of a pup so clearly! aside from some incredibly crummy stock pups long ago, all my pups I purchase are potted. How can you tell the mag is unoriented?
I kinda like the mismatched pups. ( I know you plan to change for tone tho) Puts me in mind of Page's

Nice dude! I really dig the Fenderish style colors on LP's. That's a sweet looker man!

Cool, thanks for the info, I'll have to try and get to the bottom of this.

From what I've read about shaw's he used unoriented a5s. That isn't something I can verify by looking at it, but I can definitely see the "roughcast". This pickup is still in question though, I need to find some experts to identify it for me with certainty.

Re: NGD - Happy 4th! It's American.

I'm pretty convinced that I have Tim Shaw pickups here. They are from 1980 and 1981 and are both "137" neck models.

This pup is installed in the neck, reads 7.0

This pup came with the guitar but is not installed. Also a "137" neck model, but hotter, 7.7

It makes sense, then, to install the other shaw in the bridge for a 7.0 and 7.7 matched zebra set. Sad thing is that I REALLY love the black in the bridge and zebra in the neck, but I have to try these pups together.

To the best of my knowledge those ARE Shaw pickups. Congrats dude, you hit the jackpot. The thing about shaws was, ya want the 85's ideally, cause he was perfecting them over the period from 80 to 85, when he finally got it right , and now the closest thing is the 57 classic.

Cool, I'll get that other shaw installed and report back.

Re: NGD - Happy 4th! It's American.

She's sweet!

How do you like the Grovers? I need different tuners on my guitar, I want the Keystone buttons, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. Do they keep it in tune?
