NGD incoming! Mod platform - Ideas?

@Rex_Rocker my morning coffee shot started to kick in, how's this 5 way switching for a mod:
1. Neck single coil on
2. Bridge single coil on
3. Parallel
4. Series
5. Mute - like a kill switch you know, à la Tom Morello :)

Today's country is rock from the 70s-80s
Yeeeeaa.....in a redundant commercialized pandering America Trucks and Beer sorta way. Oh and the occasional song about Ole Red and The Good Lord.....🤣
Ive allways said if modern country had a mute option for the vocal track i could listen to it.

Modern country is extemely unique in ways that I haven't quite nailed down yet. I mean that as a negative

Oh!
No, just the bridge humbucker you have. What I meant was:
1. Neck side single coil on
2. Bridge side single coil on
Wasn't quite clear indeed.
Oh! Would that be possible with a plain Jane 5 way or would I need a super 5 way?

I think 5 options would be overkill. One of the coils probably sounds better split than the other. I'm guessing the slugs sound less tinny as they're further away from the bridge. But maybe series, parallel, and split would be nice.

Great idea!

On my JB i have a triple shot ring
And can preview the slug and screw coils
and series or parallel as well

I find the screw coils slightly brighter
And the slugs a but more mid focused

I find this to be true even on the JazzN
Even though the positions are reversed
With the screws further away from the bridge

I have to say I do prefer the sound of the slugs when playing at the house
While I would imagine the slightly brighter screws would cut through a mix better

And yea, I was definitely planning on upgrading all the electronics. I've got a DiMarzio pot and a Fender (I assume Switchcraft?) jack.
I have been pleasantly surprised with stock pickups in cheap guitars. I think they are usually knock offs of proven designs. It might be a JB or Distortion clone.

That is a sweet no nonsense guitar.

I do love me some cheap knockoff pickups

My ears hear little difference between ceramic and Alnico magnets

I see boutique pickup makers talking trash about the inexpensive competition

It's just flailing at the wind
Just trying to keep their market value
I understand

But it ain't magic or mojo
It wires and magnets

The cheap ones sound identical to the boutique
You want a pickup
Manufacturers want to sell you a backstory
An ad copy that makes you prize their cheap wire and magnets over the other guys

I've had good and bad luck with cheapie pickups. My Artecs I got off Amazon are fine. The stock pickups in my old Epiphone Special II sounded fine but were super microphonic.

Of course I'm going to plug it in first to see how it sounds as is at least out of curiosity. But it's not like I'm buying new pickups for it either. I've already got the pickups, and modding the guitar is kinda the whole point of it.

I don't actually know! Ground control calling major @Artie ? 😀

I've had MJ make me several sets of pickups. There is a reason people pay for that.
Vanity
Too much money in pocket
Don't know how to use a tone control

Yes there are reasons for everything

Not necessarily the ones people use

Edit
I apologize that is rude
Still true but rude

Awww. I'm flattered. :giggle:

I'd either do, simple, or deluxe.

Simple: 2-way toggle: series or parallel.
Simple+: 3-way. Toggle or blade. Series/Parallel/Split.

Deluxe: Hide a hot single, (Lil humbucker), under the neck position, ala Secret Agent. Then 3-way for:
Bridge series
Bridge parallel
Bridge split with secret pup.

I'm thinking of doing this exact thing with my Peavey Rockmaster.

I went down a rabbit hole from 2000-2015 swapping pickups, trying different things, and the pickups I circled back around to are very "middle of the road" med/high output humbuckers, similar to many stock and OEM pickups. Now with boost and amp modeling I can usually coax what I need from stock pickups, assuming they aren't microphonic.

I still like swapping pickups, but I know what I like and can usually get by with stock.

Across the board, if you make your living with tools, the tools are worth investing in. It makes less sense if you don't.

This falls apart when you consider that guitar pickups don't have the same cost/benefit tradeoffs as something you'd find in a factory
