NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

As soon as I'd seen the pics of this year's PDN, I knew I had to have one. So I ordered an AL HH with the package, but that won't come until December or so.

Cue a few days ago, a few shops started receiving some PDNs. The pictures looked quite different from the original MusicMan pics, especially Sweetwater's; theirs looked much flatter and greyer than the vibrant blue sparkles I expected. I started worrying about my AL

But then, Drum Guitar City Land had their Valentine in-stock. And it looked GLORIOUS. Still grey, but with a thicker grain. And a hell of a neck to boot!

Got her today; potato pics for now:

First of, as of every single MusicMan, the build quality is just superlative. Incredible axe. Lightweight, GORGEOUS and perfect finish, and she sounds HUGE. The ebony board has a light brown streak to it... the stainless steel frets are buttery smooth, as is their wont.

The roasting of the neck makes it virtually disappear in your hand. It feels just amazing but then again, all of their necks do, at least to me.
The flame is a little uneven on this example; it fades a little on the player's side. I'd have obviously preferred it the other way around but, as you can see from the pics, it's not like it's an ugly neck either!

The electronics are so far removed from my usual setup, but are very intuitive. In large part this is due to the push-push which are, I am not exaggerating here, SO MUCH BETTER and easier to use than push-pulls... One controls the boost circuit, the other the neck pickup's split.
This baby also has the silent circuit built-in. So she's dead quiet on all single-coils positions.
Normally, the first thing I'd do to a guitar like this is replace the bridge single-coil with a humbucker (mark my words: a Bareknuckle HolyDiver would sound incredible in this large slab of Swamp Ash...). I'd then replace the 3-way switch with a 5-way and wire it like an Axis or AL HH. But I'm not sure I'll ever get to that, for three reasons:
1) the silent circuit makes re-wiring a little annoying, and I may have to sacrifice it to simply things
2) It's easier to use the push-pull than to quickly hit the intermediate positions on a 5-way!
3) she sounds GREAT
I've never heard a Maroon5 song but I'll give James Valentine this: this guy knows how to design a coooool guitar...

That's cool! Loks kind of like a Grestch Sparkle Jet.

Looks very nice. IA white one caught my eye on Music Zoo's site and made me notice it. Really nice body shape, beautiful neck and I can appreciate the simplicity of the design and features. Congrats - it's a beauty.

And Drum City Guitarland is a great place to buy from. I drop by every so often to check out their stock; so many cool guitars and a ton of one off/prototype stuff hanging on their walls and they're friendly and helpful.

Different and cool, they should give you shares in the company. Enjoy in good health.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

I didn't know about that model at all. It looks amazing man.

So that pickup in the bridge with the slanted screws is actually a single coil? Not a P90 of sorts? Trippy.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

One of my favorite features on a guitar is a fretboard with no inlays.

:D nothing compared to others out there, but I'm sure getting there! AL HH, AL SSS, JPX-7, Axis SS, JV PDN, and still waiting for an AL HH PDN.

Yep the bridge pickup is a single coil. No idea what the magnets are yet (polepieces like a single-coil, or bar magnets like a P90).

One thing about this axe: I really wish it had a forearm contour. The wedge-shaped body is advertised as being more comfortable but it is not, to me. Squared body edges always dig into my arm and this is no exception. There's also no tummy cut but that's not as noticeable.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

What's the neck profile like? Big? Small?

How's the boost circuit? Can you control the amount of boost? Is it like a clean boost, or more just adding gain?

And what's the voicing of the bridge pickup? Can you compare it to a Tele or Strat or P90 bridge pickup?

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

Feels like a slightly thinner AL HH profile. Nicely round and C-shaped, very comfortable. Easy to get to grips with. I love it!

The boost is, I believe, controllable, but with trimpots inside the electronics cavity. I don't think they're meant to be tweaked much. A clean boost will add gain if your amp is out of headroom, so the two options are not mutually exclusive. In this case it's quite powerful, enough to turn a clean-but-barely amp into a fiery overdriven tone with just the push of a pot!

The bridge pickup is... peculiar. It's ballsy, and quite smooth. More so than a Tele pickup. But it has that thick lead tone you'd want out of a great Tele, almost as if it had some of the P90 balls to it. I definitely need to spend more time with this pickup though, especially clean.

Heard some demos of this one, sounds pretty good; neck looks great!

One of my favorite features on a guitar is a fretboard with no inlays.

:werd: I think they're pointless - can't see them from playing position anyway.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

I dig it.
What's the deal with the bridge? I like it they way it looks but not sure why it's so big if the strings run through the body?

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

JV says the boost is adjustable from 5-20db. I just listened to Jude Gold's podcast with the SNL guitarist. They were at JV's house, using two of his sig models. They sounded great, and both guys were really impressed with them.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

Music Mans are my favorite guitars, and this one looks like a winner. I dig the Silent Circuit, too- it seems like a great way to kill hum from a single coil. I think I would dig this model a little more if it had HH pickups, but man, that neck! It will look great on stage.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

It's not far off the standard MM bridge. It's string through. It's that large cover that throws the purpose off.

Re: NGD! Incredible new MusicMan model

I am guessing the large cover over the bridge saddles is to give your hand a place to rest without the screws cutting your hand up. Does it work, or does it get in the way?
