NGD it's a Classic

Re: NGD it's a Classic

A few observations -

First I actually had an issue with the guitar last night! Ahhhhh got to burn it now;) The toggle switch came loose in the middle of the first set. PITA but it made it thru. I took it apart to fix it today and realized the top is slightly thicker at the switch than my '05 but they didn't make the hardware with more threads to accommodate the thickness nor did they put a star washer in place to stop it from spinning loose. A simple .25 cent/trip to the hardware store fix but I noticed a number of the '17's I played had loose toggle switchess. A minor oversight to me but an oversight nonetheless.

Ahhh, now we're seeing the Gibson we all know and love.

Re: NGD it's a Classic

Yeah it is plek'd. I made a note in that thread about it.

The others I played were obviously from different runs and they've changed the programming or something. These frets actually have a crown to them.

I know it's the honeymoon stage but I can't find a fault with anything on it. I used it for rehearsal last night and other than tweaking the pups to my tastes it was perfect out of the box. Go Gibson!!!

Wow! Kudos to Gibson.
What went wrong?! QC usually isn't up to this level.

Re: NGD it's a Classic

My first gas for a goldtop was when I was playing up in Toronto in '71-72. I saw a band playing who had one with P-90 pups...gorgeous guitar and even better tone. From that evening on, I had to have one. Finally, about 40 years later I got mine.

(Too bad I didn't get it sooner when the quality was higher and the price was lower, however). It's beautiful and I still totally love it (I fixed the quality problems...had to do with fret ends and nubs).

Re: NGD it's a Classic

This is made me want a Goldtop many moons ago, it was nice to finally get one, well a Gibson one

Re: NGD it's a Classic

I noticed how you blotted out the serial number
The top of the headstock looks a bit low

I was reading Nathan's thread bout his American Strat
And then how to spot fakes
And there were these things......

Oh never mind that, as long as you like it......

Re: NGD it's a Classic

huh? I assure you it's legit, I never publish s/n's

I also always blot out at least part of the S.N. before posting any of my Gibson's... There's absolutely nothing about the this guitar that looks even remotely fake...

It's definitely Gibson through & through & she's a real beauty to boot!!!

Re: NGD it's a Classic

Just loving this hell out of this guitar, I get up early to play it before work every morning lol

Re: NGD it's a Classic

My most used LP is a goldtop. I love looking at them because the shade of gold varies a little from different years. I like seeing them with zebras and black, because I've only ever used nickel on mine.

I still think it needs the toggle ring to look correct though. Now I know why they didn't put one on that model. They would have needed to route the cavity deeper. I also like them better with the pickguard on.

There's very few guitars that look better under stage lights.

Re: NGD it's a Classic

I usually take the rings off my guitars and I always take the guards off if possible.

Just me I guess but I don't care for plastic when I can have the color or the wood showing

Re: NGD it's a Classic

I realize when I unplugged today the jack is a little loose, it's nice they used the metal plate on these, though I never have really had an issue with the plastic ones. I try to tighten it up and it's a little too resistant so as not to do any damage trying to tighten it I take the plate off. It looks a little funny so I undo the jack and so Gibson being Gibson they have 2 inner tooth star-washers behind the plate. It's pretty tough to get that to work right...took one off and it's snug as a bug now. Guess assembly couldn't figure out what to do with all the extra star-washers that they weren't using on the toggle lol

You know if one star-washer can hold it tight with 2 that sucker will never come off:smash:

Re: NGD it's a Classic

I try not to use locktite on parts like that unless absolutely necessary. The double washers were sillythat actually has the opposite of the desired effect and never lets them get a proper bite and shorten how much thread can be used.
