NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

I live in Boston and the Guitar Center near Berklee gets some pretty good stuff in every now and then. I work at Berklee and know a lot of students trade in stuff over there, as well as faculty. I always check in on their used inventory which is also posted online. I've scored a USA Hamer Studio there for $650 before that was dead mint, and it was preFMIC as well. I scoped out the inventory on Friday morning and found out they just had a Jackson SL2H Metallic Black come in and it was $899. I was extremely interested and wanted to check it out. Figured it was a hardtail version at that price and it was not. OFR model.

It's a quarter sawn maple neck through model with ebony board, shark fin inlays, binding on neck and head stock as well. Alder wings with one volume and one tone and 3 way selector. Black OFR with black SD TB4 and 59n pickups. The only dings on it are on the left edge of the facing, both size of my pinky nail. Original case included and still had original whammy bar as well.

I plugged it straight into a Vox Valvetronix and went through a bunch of different tones. I was not able to get a complete feel for the sound because the guitar had been strung up with cheap 9 gauge strings and had a C+ setup done on the flyd. Pretty sure GC restrings all used axes with crappy 9 gauge strings to make them all seem super easy to play. Still, she sounded decent. I took her home in a half hour after 3 people in the store came up to me and said how beautiful the guitar looked and sounded. I knew it would go quickly.

The tone is smooth, that's mainly due to the SD pickups. I am looking very forward to dropping it off with my tech today to have it restrung and setup with 10 gauge Ernie Ball Cobalt strings.

Such a steal for $899, this model retails on sweet water for $2,300. Haha, love it when GC staff dont know what they're doing. This could have gone for a lot more. We'll see how she sounds with a new setup and quality strings. Right now, the JB is a little muddy, but the 59 has a cool vibe. Maybe I'll throw my Custom/59 hybrid in the bridge of this axe, or I'll go pickup some pickups that are totally metal. Anyone else got a Jackson Soloist?

Dude soloist are freaking sweet I love my sl1. I want a sl2 to match it so bad. Those guitars do way more than metal

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

Yes, it is sweet. I am hoping it will brighten up with the new set f 10 gauge strings. RIght now it has a darker acoustic tone, but again, the strings on it are complete crap. Who knows what GC brings in for their stock strings. The only complaint I have is that the OFR fine tuners kind of get in the way of my picking hand and are causing me to tweak my technique so that I am not pushing down on the end of the tuners, causing pitch to go sharp. I may just have the tech tweak the OFR to only go down, or perhaps I'll think about a hipshot tremsetter down the road. I heard those help with keeping floating bridges a little more stable. I'm still blown away by the deal I got lol...

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

That is a MASSIVE deal even with a couple of dings man. Soloists are simply fantastic guitars. Congrats!

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

That is a good deal but the used Jackson market is pretty crappy right now. Check eBay and there are an enormous amount of used Jacksons that just aren't selling even for pretty low amounts.

A few years ago I grabbed both a Korina KV2 for a grand and a SL1 in black with OFR for $600. It all depends on if the person trading it in need rent/beer money or actually know what they have.

Nice find though. Enjoy.

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

I brought mine a few years ago with buckle rash and a little chip out of the pointy headstock for $899, so you really got a good deal.

Forget about the tremsetter, there's other options out there like the tremolo-no, just go on the floydupgrades web site and look up the trem stops

Last time I was in Guitar Center and considered trading in my Jackson, they told me to hold on to it, claiming that any guitars with ebony boards are going to go up in value, like brazilian rosewood, since none of the guitar makers are able to get ebony anymore (Jackson may be using their stockpile right now). That also is dependent on this economy turning around

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

haha Ill try getting pics guys, I am almost completely blind so that really is not my forte. I should have a friend come over and take pics of all my axes and post them on the forum. They're all almost complete 1 offs. The Carvin and Jackson are USA production models. I need to update my sig as well.

Re: NGD: Jackson SL2H incredible deal!

Whats a "bluesguy" doin' with a Soloist? I know, now someone will come on with a pic of some famous bluesguy with a Soloist to prove me wrong yet again..never fails. Ahh, nevermind. Congrats. Sweet guitar. You practically stoled it.
