NGD: Killer discontinued Yamaha!

Here is a guitar that will intrigue you and amaze you: my recently acquired 1996 RGX621DM.
SHe's a really sweet sounding guitar. It feels like an Ibanez RG for the obvious reasons, but the sounds lean toward Fender Strat with humbuckers, something Dave Murray would use. To me she can beat all the low and middle end Japanese RGs, including the classic RG550, particularly in the clean tone department.
The TRS-Pro trem is pretty good for what I do since I don't usually perform the aggressive dives or other kind of abuses. I use it just like what Jeff Beck does with his Strat.
Anyway, enjoy!

Yes, those are factory scalloped frets, from 20th to 24th. I like the way these were scalloped.
My other Yamaha guitars: 1985 SG200, 2005 CG-111C. I know, I am quite a Yamaholic. XD

Nice guitar! I dig the neck access. Yamaha has always been a sleeper guitar company to me.

IMHO, its because they come off as very bland. Competent, but bland. Most guitarists I've talked to says the same thing. They're quaility instruments for sure, every Yamaha I've tried have been a fine instrument. Reliable. But not fun. Never fun. I've never picked up a Yamaha, played it and gone "man, this was a blast". They're Ibanez' serious older brother, who has all his **** together but needs to f***ing relax every now and then.
Might also be because they don't seem to market themselves as agressively either. Never gone into a music shop and found more than a handful of Yamahas. Can't name any endorsers either.

That beings said, nice to see you're enjoying it, Knight. Always fun to find something obscure that works well.

I always wanted one of those- rumor is that Warmoth built the necks

6dr0c0etmvx90jdm2g1d6jg6yr.jpgThose also have the compound radius neck I believe. They have the same neck joint and compound radius profile as my Pacifica 521. That one you have is a real gem. I have a lower model RGX121S with the standard neck joint, neck profile and rosewood fingerboard.

I think all the MIT RGX from the 80's to early 2000s are hot. I had an offer for the same RGX121S for a price that is almost free, the blue one. However my schedule clashes with his, so no chance for a meet up. Otherwise I could grab that and sell for a much higher price, hahaha!
Now the only strat-styled guitar I would drool over is the wine-red PAC611 that has Wilkinson tremolo.

OMG you are kidding me. Though I heard that the mid to high Pacificas of mid-90's had Warmoth necks. I thought only the high end Japanese models sport that.

Re: NGD: Killer discontinued Yamaha!

Those are really nice guitars that were designed to compete with the Ibanez RG, which is obvious. They are under the radar guitars because they arent very well known, however they are built very well and have some cool features on them like a height adjustable locking nut, etc..
My buddy has an RGX-612P and it seems like its a very solid guitar. It has that adjustable locking nut, and a Gotoh trem as well if Im not mistaken..
Im diggin that neck plate (s), Im always drawn to different neck plate designs because its nice to see something different.
Nice guitar thanks for sharing!

That's a RGX421 Pro I think. Are those Blackouts?

The RGX is simply the most diverse among the Yamaha's 3 major electric lines (the other being S(B)G, and Pacifica). Looking at all the models made from the 80's to now, it is hard to believe they all belong to the same line. One would define 3 categories more among all those models.
The 90's RGX is obviously targeted toward the IBANEZ RG, while the 80's were more like Jackson/Charvel and ESP. The 21th century verions, like the RGX A2 and RGX-TT, are the most unique incarnations IMO.
Speakin gof RGX-TT, here is the one I had, and I totally regret selling it.

The only ones I've seen with Warmoth-made necks are the 800 series of Pacifica guitars.

The Warmoth necks were featured in Japanese Pacificas, which were 900 and up. Or was there any 800 made in Japan?

Re: NGD: Killer discontinued Yamaha!

I have wanted an RGX for the longest time, ever since I played a RGX520DZ in a store, went back the next week and was gone...

Congrats man!

2 years ago I saw a 1987 RGX620S, which had a Jackson/Charvel type headstock and a ESP type body and RM-Pro trem. Great condition for its age, just needed to fix the pots and toggle switch. A month later, when I was ready to grab it, the original seller decided to keep it.

So yeah, I completely understand how you feel.

RGX520DZ and RGX620DZ featured the fingler-clamp tremolo system, one of 2 Yamaha-designed Floyd-type trems (the other is RM-Pro). As far as I remember this tremolo system was by far the easiest to deal with when it comes to changing strings and reliability.
