NGD Let Down

It often takes me a couple weeks before I really appreciate pickups after a change. Every pickup requires different adjustment to height and screws before I'm happy with it.

Well damn! i haven't been on in a while because I've been doing A LOT of modding on two of my guitars and I can't seem to have any luck on the SD forum as far as uploading pics goes. Frustrating, but this is indeed the place to come when you need help with, or wanna talk pickups.

As fa as the Pegasus/Sentient set, its quite possible I may have done a bit of jumping the gun without giving them a proper chance. But my Les Paul that I had them in is my number one guitar and I play it so much because I love the way it feels and the way it sounds. It is a guitar that when I play it, it sounds like EXACTLY what a Les Paul should and does. That being said, I think there are A LOT of posts on this thread that are right on the money. A couple mention the fact that replacing the Pearly Gates in a USA Les Paul Standard is going to be tough to beat period. I believe that is spot on to tell the truth. Sometimes we need little lessons in life to remind us that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, and this was one of those for me. Its amazing how little time it took me to realize I had made a terrible mistake. I put the Pearly Gates back in and POOF, my Les Paul was my Les Paul again and I was right back to being able to achieve the tones in my head! I'm sure given the right guitar, or maybe even a good deal of time to find their sweet spot in a Les Paul, the Pegasus/Sentient set can surely be a great sounding set of pickups. But tone is also so subjective too. We all have a tone we chase in our heads, and I wouldn't be surprised to find there are other people besides just me, who have more than one, but we still tend to lean toward one more than all the others. For me that tone begins with my Les Paulk and those Pearly Gates. I told my girl as I was putting them back in, that I would never be taking them out again and I meant it. That guitar is exactly as it should be and if it aint broke I aint gonna try and fix it anymore. Thanks for all the replies forum, n sorry if I ruffled any feathers, wasn't my intention. Cheers

Thanks for the update! Sometimes we don't know how this stuff turns out unless you let us know.

Well, you still didn't provide much info about what you didn't like about the Pegasus/Sentient. :P

My guess is you're more of an old-school rock kinda guy?

If you'd like a bit more output and slightly richer lows - without transforming the character and feel of the pickup - you might consider a double thick A2 mag for in your PGB. This is quite different from switching to a different type of mag. It just takes what the pickup's already doing and gives you a little more of it.

Still, many feel the PGB is about perfect for most Les Pauls just the way it is.

PS: to include pics here you have to put them on a hosting site and put a link on your post.
This saves the forum a lot of storage space and associated expense.
I've been very happy Imgur. It's free (and easy to use, unlike some others I tried).

Pegasus/Sentient is a much more modern & compressed type of sound. I could see it being a shock to someone who liked PGs.

Yup, that's me all day long. I like metal too, but I'm a rock and roll type of dude at heart and that's the sound I like. My Pearly Gates do it all. Someone in this thread said something about Pearly Gates in a Les Paul is kinda hard to top and they were exactly right. I think as far as that guitar goes, I have reached the top of the mountain as far as tone goes. It's badass, but being the constantly in the rabbit hole of tone guy that I am as well, I just got too used to it I guess. I play it all the time, and it's my number one, and my Go To. It's the one guitar I can pickup and find the tone I'm trying to get at least 90% of the time. And when it doesn't do it, it's because I need my Strat.. lol. It will easily do everything from Tom Petty to Tool. And now that I've got my Helix, it's like having just about any of the truly great amps at your disposal any day any time. And I've gotten great at dialing it in too. I can create badges stereo wet dry rigs, pretty much anything you can dream up. So with that, my Les Paul, and my Fender Strat, I can pretty much nail anything I want. I don't even have to play a riff over and over again. I just go in Cubase or Reaper, record what I want to play, and I always record 2 tracks, one with an Amp with effects (or amps) and one just the dry signal. Them I can use Helix Native to put the recording on a loop, or break down sections and loop each one at a time and tweak my amps and effects and IRs till I get exactly where I want to be, then save it as a preset, and viola, I'm good to go. I still love my tube amps, don't get me wrong. But you can't beat the helix when it comes to workflow and creating or experimenting. As a kid I dreamed about having the ability to have access to this kind of tone, and now I have it in my home studio right down in the basement. It's wild to think how far we've come.
