NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

INTENSELY corrosive sweat
First buy from fb marketplace. I picked up this Dimarzio-equipped, ugly Matsumoku goodness last night. Couldn’t argue with $100...

82-85 Vox Standard 24 model 3503.

It kicks ass! It needs a LOT of setup work. The nut has been replaced but looks like never really cut properly or shaped but hey-the unrouched wiring is in great shape, the factory dimarzios sound super nasty rolled off a bit thanks to factory treble caps, and the god-awful roller paint comes off the bombproof Japanese poly paint with just a little acetone. Best $100, ever!

Nice

Although take a closer look, that looks like it could be Japanese overwound PAFs with doublethick mags

Double-hex and double-creme were never off-limits as far as 70s and 80s Japanese brands were concerned

Re: NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

They could even be Japanese Super Distortion clones depending on how hot they are. Very common in that era.

Re: NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

They’re factory Dimarzios, according to my research, and the factory solder is intact...

I can also see the triangular ears down in there.

The ones people call japanese super distortion clones look visually similar, but are a quite different design. The ones I've seen are wound more like PAF Pros, but have a big beefy oversized mag that looks silvery but isn't conductive (so ceramic but a different ceramic than Duncan uses, I guess?)

Huh...so much for the count the bobbin holes on 12-hex pickups theory, I guess

Re: NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

It’s possible you’re right but I haven’t had the chance to pull the strings and look. Everything I’ve seen points to early 80s Dimarzios but until I see the underside of the baseplate, it’s not 100%.

Congrats man, looks mean and sound the part, Happy New Guitar Day :headbang:

Re: NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

Nice score! That’s a keeper for sure.

And off topic...killer mutton chops!!

Even if they're Gotoh / Maxon the Japanese SD clones still sound pretty good, and $100 is a steal.

Re: NGD! MIJ goodness...CHEAP!

Yeah, I’m happy with the tones on hand so I’m not in a hurry to see what they are until I change strings and do a real setup.
