NGD: Paul Gilbert Mikro

As soon as I saw the video for Ibanez's Paul Gilbert Mikro I called my guy at the dealer and had him order one for me. It came in yesterday, picked it up this morning. Plays good, not great - but I'll take care of that after lunch. I asked all the guys at the store if they had played it, and they all had big smiles! The receptionist said it was "cute". I'll play it for awhile to check out the sound, and if the pickups need an upgrade... no problem, I have that covered, too. Report later!

What's the idea behind it? I see it's super small.

Although I play nothing like him, I'd love his red Fireman and especially his new purple HH Floyd Fireman!

LOL DUDE! Mine just got here yesterday too!

It's a hilarious guitar that lets you do GIANT stretches and HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE bends. It's surprisingly well made for the price tag.

Only thing I'm doing to it so far is upgrading the tuners. Not enough gear turning ratio for a short scale instrument so it's annoying to tune it: barely touch the pegs and it goes way off. Other than that it's pretty decent. Pickups aren't Duncan quality obviously but... for $200... not all that bad really. They don't clean up well, they sound a bit congested, but nothing I can't fix with a few amp knob tweaks.

Correctamundo. Need a different ratio - maybe slower?. I got time to sit down at the bench with this, and found it was already setup decently with 10's. Truss rod was great, almost straight. I wanted the intonation a little better so I lowered the action a taste at the bridge, and just barely at the nut. Better! Adjusted the pickups a little closer to the strings for max sensitivity.

Plugged into the Herschell..... These stock pickups are HOT! Ow, they sizzle. Treble is a mite spiky, but that can be fixed. A bit of Stratitus on the E & A above the 12th fret, maybe have to raise the strings a bit. Not crazy about the strings - I'll put on some D'Addarios later, maybe even go to 11's. The frets are not polished really well, but they are level.

Fit and finish - the usual good job from Ibanez even on their cheap stuff. I like it a lot! It's fun.

My pal at the store is a lefty.... he called later in the afternoon to ask how I like it. He noticed they offer a lefty Iceman Mikro.... He may order one to play with his oldies band. That would be great to hear in his hands, 'cause he's a monster.

More later! If you can afford this, it's worth it, guys!

Definitely a great guitar for just $200!

The pickups sound like a sort of ghetto less refined cross version of the Dimarzio Evolution and Super Distortion, and they very hot with pretty decent harmonics actually! Sound quality isn't all that smooth and rolling down the volume does nothing to clean it up, it's completely binary with only full blast and off. But hey! $200 guitar with pickups like these? Damn good to me, their surprisingly not super muddy, I might not even bother changing them lol. Maybe later the down the road if I want to sweeten up the sound a bit or whatever, but right now for shredding some wide stretched licks and doing some super huge bends? I'm game!
