Picked up a new Honey burst Fender Modern Player Tele with a maple neck /pine body bucker in the bridge strat middle and Tele neck pickup set. Thing flat RIPPS at gain with a voice that flat is knocking me out!!
Camera is stone dead so no photos right now but here is a video clip off my Zoom Q3 from this morning at Church running it through my old Peavey Ultra + tube head / Fender 2/12 using only a Boss delay in the loop.

Re: NGD piney Fender goodness.

I believe GJ has one of these Teles as well, and has spoken well of it.

Never thought much about a pine body sounding good till I picked this one up. Shop in a close by City was going under and I could get it for below dealers cost. Picked it up plugged it in hit the gain and the bridge tones in particular floored me so took her home for under $250.
It's one of these

Your church looks a lot more fun than the masses my mom used to drag me to.

Great guitar!

^^ Good price on that puppy.

As you no doubt know, Leo's early prototypes and the first Esquires (pre-Broadcaster) had pine bodies and necks without a trussrod - tone monsters supposedly. This thing is very cool: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/180456-1950-double-esquire-build.html.

Some booteek makers do spruce bodied electrics with good results. Iirc, ItsaBass has a spruce bodied G&L Strat which he likes a lot.

Re: NGD piney Fender goodness.

Yeah, there's a few inexpensive guitars I have that I like a lot and that's one of them. The pine body is more solid than I thought, since I haven't had any problems like strap buttons pulling out. It's a decent sounding body, and the neck plays better than most of the laquered maple tele necks I've played, due to the modern radius and frets. Even the bridge and tuners are perfectly acceptable.

The parts you may want to replace are the cheap stiff pots, plastic knobs, wiring, etc. Fender pickguards don't fit it, so you'll have to have a custom made one if you decide to change things up.

I ended up installing a Pickguard Heaven single ply gloss black, Fender CTS pots, Fender dome knobs, a nickel C/59 hybrid and a Duncan mini hum SM-1N. And Schaller strap locks. I replaced the large head screws with regular Fender ones.
I also filed and polished the fret ends.

Those few steps transformed a good guitar into a pro quality instrument. The stock pickups weren't terrible, but of course Duncans made a real improvement. I think the faux nickel pickup ring looks great with a nickel covered pickup as well.

Thanks for that man. I really like the spankin growl of the stock bridge pickup so far in this pine body. It has it's own unique voice that I am really digging but wondered about in particular dropping a 59/custom hybrid in this one. How did the tone change in the bridge on yours with the 59/C?

Re: NGD piney Fender goodness.

Bought a new camera today so here are a few shots of her.

Still tweaking it in but so far so good and digging this one!

Re: NGD piney Fender goodness.

Not all pine is created equal. I have some nice 100yr plus stuff here i will be using one day soon. I want to make a 27 fret tele style beast haha

Nice teleo

At first, I put an overwound C5 in it, and it was way too hot. Then a regular C5....still a bit too much punch.
I like the C/59, but I'm not even sure that's the one that will stay. I'd like to try a 59, WLH, and P-Rail in it eventually. Or maybe a Phat Cat. The mini hum neck is a keeper. I got that idea from the 52 Hot Rod.

I like to think of this guitar as my own custom version of Seymour's 35th Ann. TeleGib.
