Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

Okay. Here are some pics of an STKP-1 in the stock PRS SE routs.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

You really like your little close-up teaser pictures, huh? Let's have the full frontal! I want nothing left to my imagination.

Okay. You asked for it. As you can see, a naughty-but-nice idea has entered my head.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

Today, I have been mostly mulling over what to do next about the pickup cavity depth problem.

1) WOODWORK - Deepen the cavities in the PRS SE to accept stacked-coil P90-alikes.
2) SOLDERING - Rob the Antiquity and SP90-3n single coils out of my Gibson LP Jr Spl. Fit Stacks into its cavernous routs and the single coil Duncans into the PRS SE.
3) SOLDERING - Rob the Antiquity out of my PRS SE One. Reinstate some other pickup in that. Sell it. Install the Ant P90 and A N Other into the PRS SE Soapbar.

Any opinions or suggestions welcome. (Don't mention mini humbuckers. I have already considered and rejected that notion.)

By the love of all that is good in this world, ROUTE THAT GUITAR FOR THREE P90'S. As soon as possible.

Aw, shucks. That would wipe out my excuse for ever buying a non-reverse Gibson Firebird III.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

Get that in a different color later. 3 P90's in this guitar nao

Plus, gives you an excuse to get one of these

True except that, first, I would have to find somebody in the UK who stocks that switch.

Hey, would two P90s and one of the SD Custom Order Strat-pickup-in-a-P90-cover models count? Perhaps, I should forget the StewMac switch and find a proper old-fashioned Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster type. Just leave it on the All Three Pickups position. :naughty:

i have found myself wondering about a tv jones soapbar in the bridge of mine; heard the clip on the site? sounds pretty good to me
you know, you could put legit P90s in the neck and bridge slots and a soapbar-sized filtertron in the middle... or one of your stacks... think of the switching...

sorry to see i was right about the routs.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

So is my wallet! I have concluded that deepening the neck PU cavity runs a high risk of giving the SE Soapbar loose-neck-itis. (Like a Seventies Gibson SG.)

Legit P90s (or TV Jones 'trons) will be the simplest option. Sometimes, I wonder whether a Staple would be good as the neck pickup. Then, I remember that EU health and safety regulations have outlawed the pickups over their Lead content. :( I know that mini HBs would fit but I want that P90 rudeness.

Yes. I have auditioned the soundbites on the TVJ website. I also dug the Brian Setzer video. Unfortunately, in the UK, one brand new TVJ pickup would cost me roughly as much as I paid for the guitar.

I am strongly tempted to rob the Antiquity P90 from my PRS SE One. Restoring that guitar to original spec and selling it would go some way towards financing the white SE Soapbar. So, of course, would robbing two Duncans from my Gibson LP Jr Spl, fitting Stacks in that and selling it on. :scratchch

Pre-owned SD SP90-2 Hot pickups are fairly common on eBay UK but I am not sure that I like their sound and dynamic response. Have you ever tried this model on your PRS SE?

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

UPDATE - The solution to my P90 dilemma has arrived without me having to do anything other than wait.

Just scored a pair of lightly pre-owned Lindy Fralin P90s for £100 ($135) including shipping via eBay UK. Just need to decide whether these go in the PRS SE Soapbar or whether I swap them with the Seymour Duncans currently in my Gibson LP Jr Spl. :scratchch

Of course, I could still wig out and rout the PRS SE for a third P90. (See post #24.) :naughty:

ouch. that's a bit rough

provided they fit...

no, but it's a most interesting idea. i don't remember reading anything bad about them, but they're not as widely tested as many other SDs...
sounds like a challenging task in the UK; i'm starting to think we're no longer the most ripped-off country for musical gear

happy hunting, keep us posted
whatever happens, it'll always be a sexy guitar

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

keep us posted

Fralins and USA control parts fitted. Sounding good. Bridge PU could do with being another five or ten per cent hotter. Not confident about the stock machineheads. Otherwise, an excellent guitar, regardless of MRSP.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

In my experience, the PRS Soapbar SE aren't just great guitars for the money, but great guitars. Period.

BUT, having said that, the two things I would change are: (1) The bridge needs to be 10% hotter and the neck 10% weaker (they sound great with their own amp setting, just not with the same amp setting), and (2) the machine heads feel wobbly. The machine heads don't seem to affect tuning stability --- the more shallow break angle + straight pull headstock and graphite nut assures great stability, but the tuning machines do not inspire confidence.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

My two Fralin P90s are of approximately the same +5% output. (Just below 9k.) I have resorted to the traditional solution of achieving a level balance by setting the neck PU relatively low and the bridge PU relatively high.

I have given the stock machineheads a fair go but, at the next string change, they will be coming off. Something of Schaller M6 quality will be going on.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

ANOTHER UPDATE - Finally got around to playing this guitar in public. At an open mic night, I selected the More Gain channel of somebody's Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, left it that way and just worked the guitar controls.

Imagine, if you will, an unholy alliance of the Reverend Willy G. and Roy Buchanan. (I have the polepiece screws on the bridge pickup set so high that the entire head is visible under the D and G strings.) It has always been my contention that there is a place where the sounds of the Gibson LP Junior and Fender Esquire overlap. I think that this modified budget PRS might just be it.

Alas. There is a downside to all of this.

The white SE Soapbar does everything that I wish my PRS SE One could do. Now, I have to decide whether to modify the SE One (JB90, TV Jones 'Tron, whatever) or sell it.

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

I have P90 GAS at the minute and I'm really liking the look of these guitars and the SE Ones too :)

Re: NGD: Pre-owned PRS SE Soapbar

Guess what? I just restrung my SE One and re-instated the SD Custom Shop JB90 while the strings were off. My push-pull "woman tone" mod doesn't suit the JB90 at all and the resistance taper on the DiMarzio Pro Parts EP1201PP fails to govern the valve amp saturation in the way that I would like.

Perhaps, I need to put the Ant P90 back in one more time but wire it through a non-push-pull pot?
