The neck is very clear, bright but not thin. The bridge is pretty hot, but really chewy with some gain. I believe they're the SE versions of the HFS (hot, fat, screams) and Vintage Bass. They're not worlds apart from what you could expect from a JB/Jazz setup. Not the same, but in that realm.
I'm a knob tweaker, and love different guitar's setups for different things. I was expecting to have to modify the tone control to only affect the bridge pickup, like on my Strat or (now traded) Tele, but I guess that's single coil thinking. Setting the amp to sound clear on the neck pickup does not make the bridge pickup into an icepick, so master volume and tone work very well. The split tones are excellent, and I can get really close to most of my favorite Strat sounds.
