NGD - Three's Company

Well, I sold of my beloved Music Man Y2D last week in order to buy a new guitar. It's always a risk, selling one to pay for another that you haven't tried... but I felt confident that the brand I was buying wouldn't let me down. And I was right.

Yup, it's ANOTHER PRS!

My CE24 more than sold me on PRS as a whole, so I figured I could get something LP-esque from them. As much as I love the way LP's sound, I HATE the way they play. Don't get me wrong, I can totally rock the balls off of one, but it's just not comfortable for me at all. Maybe I've just not found the right one yet. Anyway, in the mean time, I got another PRS. Interestingly, it's not incredibly different from my CE24. The main difference is the 25" mahogany set neck over the 25.5" maple screwed on neck, and a wraparound bridge over a vibrato bridge. But those differences are huge in terms of the end product.

Beyond that, this guitar is just better. I hate to admit it, but it is. It's a damn fine instrument. I can't even really believe how good it is. It may be the best playing guitar I've ever owned. The neck plays incredibly fast. I don't know what shape it is, but it's nice and fat, a nice change of pace for me. Most all of my guitars up to this point have had necks on the skinnier side. It will take some getting used to, but I like it. The intonation is spot on with 11's, and the action is low without being too low, and with no buzz. A+

It sounds good with the stock McCarty pickups, but I've got a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers that will really make this guitar scream. (Those pickups are actually why I got the guitar, I won them and needed something to put them in) The coil split positions sound really nice. There's a great amount of versatility in this guitar considering how simple it is. Oh and for those keeping track, this is my third PRS in as many months. It will be my last for a long time, though.

Anyway, on to pictures! The top on this guitar - which is a single piece, by the way - is on the subtle side when you're looking right at it, but from the side it really comes alive. I tried to capture that, but I'm no photographer.

Re: NGD - Three's Company

Very nice! I ove the color and the maple on the top. Just enough flame to grab your eye. Congrats!

Re: NGD - Three's Company

I told the story in another thread but I will tell it again.

Years ago when I was still a teenager, I payed a wine re colored Custom 22 in a pawn shop and it has haunted me ever since. It had the "quarter moon" dot inlays but instead of a toggle like yours it has the rotary knob. I played it through a Fender Ultimate Chorus that had the red knobs and 2 Celestion Vintage 30's. I knew the amp because I knew who had pawned and lost it. That guitar was everything I could have asked for in an axe. I miss it and never even owned it!

Re: NGD - Three's Company

WOW Beautiful guitar! It really reminds me of a Hamer. Love the color.

Re: NGD - Three's Company

I can barely put this thing down. If you asked me to pick between the McCarty and the CE24, I don't think I could. I can't wait to get the WLH set in there.

Re: NGD - Three's Company

Thanks, Joe! Yeah, it's been a great guitar year for me. But that's not even counting the guitar that I put a deposit on in February. It will blow everyone's socks off, I guarantee it.

Re: NGD - Three's Company

So how long do we have to wait for this "Sock Blowing Off" experience?

Re: NGD - Three's Company

Not quite sure, the painter screwed up a minute but important detail and it's back with him so he can fix it. After that's done it should be pretty quick, maybe a week or so until I get it.
