NGD Tomorrow! (BCR Content)

So, a couple of you may have noticed that I have a thread about my 24yo daughter who wants to learn to play.

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?325266-It-s-Been-Such-a-Long-Time

This same daughter just found a guitar that she wants to buy for me. It’s not really my normal style, but it DOES seem to be hers. I told her to just buy it for herself but she wants me to have it, so I told her we’d share it.

Here’s the kicker... $50!

Doing a little searching, I think it’s a BC Rich Kerry King Metal Master Warlock which, as far as I can tell, sold new for around $250. Agathis body, 24-fret rosewood neck with a rosewood board, wraparound intonatable bridge, BCR BDSM hums, 1V, 1T.

In other words, this was NEVER a great guitar to begin with, and I’m sure it will need adjustments, strings, parts, etc. But for $50... c’mon! If I have to replace EVERYTHING it’s still a good project platform.

By the way, the daughter is NOT ending up without a guitar of her own... she’s just watched me working on my own projects and wants to build one herself. We have a project body and neck on the way for her to start working on from GuitarFetish’s factory buyout clearance:

Does anyone know anything about these particular BC Rich models?

Very cool, and it is a great guitar to learn not just playing, but how to set one up.

Re: NGD Tomorrow! (BCR Content)

That’s what I figured too. I know too many guys who have absolutely no clue about how to adjust their guitars or change them to meet their needs.

If she’s gonna play, she’s gonna know how to do these things as well.

: popworm:Bri your gonna have to grow some long hair before you play that axe.

I was prepared to hate it till I rolled down and saw the green flames

Still way too pointy for my tastes
But
I like it

On that image of the project neck, is that the actual scale or a misprint?

Yeah, it’s a bit pointy for my tastes too, but what the hell... I figure it’ll still be fun to add to the collection.

My youngest daughter (almost 12) already came up with a name for her... “Maleficent!” I thought it was pretty appropriate!

I figure on that neck that one way or another it HAS to be a misprint... there’s no way it’s only 22.5mm!

My guess is that they were in a hurry and it’s supposed to be 25.5 inches (never heard of a 22.5” scale), but we’ll find out for sure on Tuesday when it shows up. If it actually is 22.5” we’ll probably find something else and I’ll plan to find a project body sometime where I can more easily move the bridge position to accommodate the shorter scale.

Okay... got this poor darling home yesterday and, after plugging in to make sure the pickups work, took the nasty remaining 5 strings off of her...

Looks like those colored DR strings in black, and they haven’t been played in years. Whoever this thing belonged to had no f***ing idea what they were doing. The “A,” “D,” and “G” strings were all wrapped backwards around the pegs, and the“B” string was gone... but the leftover bit still around the peg was actually tied in a knot!

When I went to plug it in the cord just dropped right back out of the jack onto the floor, so I had to sit VERY still and find the “sweet spot” so I could get enough connection to verify that the pickups worked. Despite having 5 crap strings on there and the fact that I had to play without moving my body, the bridge pup sounded pretty good. The neck pup was kinda muddy, but it’s also sitting noticeably low so I’m not terribly concerned. The neck itself is straight and felt good (action is high right now). No dead spots or buzzing so far... frets are dirty but show no wear whatsoever, and the ends are nice and smooth.

The wraparound bridge is filthy but otherwise fine. I have a very similar one that I had put on my Epi LP Special that works very nicely.

Everything else, like the bridge, is in working order but dirty. The body and headstock are covered with nicks, dents, gouges, and scratches.

We were talking about repainting it, and my middle daughter (age 17 and an artist) thinks she can reproduce the graphic (personally, I’m thinking metallic red with yellow and orange flames). But we already have a guitar project coming and I have two more already in the works, so for now we’re just going to get everything cleaned up, oil the fretboard, fix the jack, get some strings on her, and adjust the neck and intonation. This way we’ll have a usable guitar by the end of the day and it’ll whet her appetite for working on the neck and body that will be showing up tomorrow.

I’ll also bring home some gloss black paint from work to camouflage the scratches for now. We can worry about filling, sanding and repainting later after we finish the other projects.

All in all, I’m feeling like the $50 was a great investment! [emoji1303]

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to say that this guitar is looooong... 42.25” to be exact. The only thing I have that it’ll fit in is the gig bag I have for my bass!

...and I’m fairly certain I know who took it!

Guitars like this are so far removed from my taste and style. Yet somehow, I managed to acquire two. For some reason, they're just plain fun. Enjoy. Great father/daughter project.

(Mine don't have the cool "spider" headstock.)

Got it all together and set up... and it’s a surprisingly fun guitar! The pickups sound good dirty but are a little lacking for cleans, which isn’t all that surprising given what this guitar is built for. Still, I’ll keep them around for awhile and consider changing them sometime down the road.

Looks like the pickups have just 2 conductors, so no coil splits or parallel, but there’s plenty of room in the cavity to add a DPDT for OOP. I’ll get around to that later too.

For now, it’s a fun new addition to the family!
