NGD--Uncle Matt in the house

Yesterday I took a little drive to get away from all the WVU football traffic and ended up in Uniontown, PA. where I hit a few thrift stores and hiked around a little.

The last stop I made was the music store I got my first good guitar ('61 Melody Maker) back in 1970. The owner's son runs it now, and has a huge stock of new Fenders, Gretsch, etc.. I checked out the used room, and found an old Electra sorta-Paul marked at $40.00--glopped over with black paint, mismatched knobs, but whoever had it hadn't messed with the neck, which felt pretty good.

I pulled the control cover to make sure it wasn't plywood, then wrote the guy a check.

Got home and did some quick fixes to get it functional enough to plug in--turns out to be decent, although HBs on an ash body is a bit different sound. Here's a pic from the Electra site, it started out as an X290.

Neat, some of those Electra's were real decent guitars, Matsumoku factory I think?

Congrats man! That looks very nice. Is that your own guitar or another?
If the later, will be expecting photos ;)

Actually, although I didn't have had many chances to verify it, I think I'm a sucker for 2 buckers in an Ash body (bolt on maple neck).

I just wish there were more of them to try out and make sure...

That brings back memories. I use to have one of them back when I was school. Bought it off my girlfriends(of that time) dad for $50 because he didn't play anymore.

Re: NGD--Uncle Matt in the house

Thanks, that's not mine, but that's what it started out as--haven't decided to try and strip it or not, cause there's a layer of silver and who knows what else underneath, might be more trouble than it's worth. I've worked on a few Electras that had the finish flaking off in pieces, maybe a reaction between the poly and the sealer.

It's definitely a Matsumoku, with a big neck like a '50's Junior, Leslie West licks fall right under my fingers, lol. The stock pickups sound kind of P-90ish with the ash body, I just need to change one of the tone pots.
