NGD - well, yes and no.

No, this isn't one of "those threads" where I say that I've had my eye on a particular guitar and have been gassing for it really bad for a couple months and finally decided to buy it, and I should be ordering it soon and I'll be receiving a package at my door in a couple months.

No, it's not that at all. I actually DID get a new guitar, so it really IS a NGD. But it was a couple weeks ago that I got it, so technically it's NOT a NGDay.

So here's the one that I got (in Desert Burst):

I have gassed for this ever since they first came out a year or so ago and I saw it at GC. Well, they put it on sale for $100 off, so I couldn't pass it up. I've got some good things to say about it and some not so good things (well, at least things that I personally don't like about it).

1). The flame maple top is much, MUCH better than the photo (mine is equivalent to at least AAA), and the Desert Burst is amazing. The appearance way surpasses any of my expectations. It really is gorgeous!
2). The electronics function flawlessly (even the p/p pots) and are much better than they used to be in recent older Epi's.
3). I love the new top hat knobs with the groove around them to make it easy to grip and pull up.
4). The pups are also much better than the older Epi pups (I think they were called the "Classic" and "Classic +" pups).
5). The neck is solid as a rock and straight as an arrow.
6). The frets are as good or better than on any guitar I have ever owned (that includes a dozen Gibsons, half a dozen Strats, and several Ric's among others). The frets have been finished with such precision that the string height at the 15th fret is less than most of my guitars' string height at the 7th fret, and no buzz at all on any string anywhere on the neck.
7). And right out of the box, the fret ends are as smooth as silk, can't feel them at all when playing...as good as any fret job I have ever done (even on my own instruments, and I admit that I am an OCD perfectionist when it comes to frets).

Now the not-so-good (or at least, the things that don't appeal to me)...

1). I don't like the matt finish on the sides. I don't mind it on the back of the guitar. And it actually feels pretty good on the neck.
2). I've been totally spoiled by Seymour Duncan. While the pups are way better than they used to be, and for a great many players they would be thought of as "really good", they aren't good enough for me (like I said, SD has spoiled me). The bridge pup is pretty good but just doesn't have the oomph. However, I'm going to try to salvage it with an A8. The neck pup is ok but the A2 is just too soft and spongy for this pup/wind...so I'm going to try an A5 there, or maybe an A4.

So that's all of the negative that I can say about it. What a great guitar for less than $500 ($399 to be exact). Actually, what a great guitar...period! I would purchase another one of these before I'd buy another Gibson (in reality, I could buy 6 or 8 of these for the price of a Gibson LP).

Yeah, it's actually more beautiful than I remember from when I first saw it at GC. The maple top grain is gorgeous, and it works so well with the Desert Burst finish.

Re: NGD - well, yes and no.

I love that new matte finish on the new epi necks. I think it strikes a perfect compromise between the whole poly/nitro feel issue. I played one with a matte neck not too long ago and completely fell in love with the feel.

Congrats, excellent choice!

And don't feel bad about being spoiled by Duncans. I just swapped out a perfectly good set of Gibson Burstbucker Pros for Seth Lovers, and I couldn't be happier.

Re: NGD - well, yes and no.

I hear you guys. I'll try to get some pics (of my actual guitar) to ya this weekend.

Re: NGD - well, yes and no.

Great score, I love mine.

I've changed out the pickups recently but left the stockers in their for quite a while, they really are very good.

I like the the matte finish but it doesn't wear in like the Gibson faded finishes. I was kind of hoping it would, just to soften it up a bit. Mine has a great neck and fret work as well. Really the best Epi I've owned along with a Wilshire Pro I had that I gave to my son.

I've gigged and recorded with it and it just Rocks with no issues.

Re: NGD - well, yes and no.

My son will likely give it back at some point, he's headed to law school soon and I doubt he'll play much.

I had 2 really both were excellent once I squared the pickups away

OK, I got some pics.
Like tiger eye, the grain changes with the direction of the light so I took a couple from slightly different angles.
