NGD - Yamaha RGX 420S

Got this in Tuesday. It looks almost brand new. It didn't come with the trem bar and I didn't have one to fit it, so I took the trem bar socket out and replaced it with the old one from my LTD M-50. Fits and works great for now. I'll end up replacing it with a black one with a push in bar like I did on the M-50. All this guitar needed was cleaned up, polish the frets, oil the fretboard and new strings and set up. There is zero wear on the jumbo frets and if there's any scratches/nicks on the body I haven't noticed them. The stock pickups are actually decent, but I will end up replacing the pickups and electronics. For $100 it was a steal. Stays in tune like a champ even when using the trem pretty hard. It even came with a strap.

Now I just gotta figure out what pickups I want to put in. I want a good, strong bridge pickup that's not overly hot and a milder, sweeter sounding neck pickup. Here's the combos I'm thinking about

Duncan Custom/Jazz or 59
Duncan Distortion/Jazz or 59
Duncan Custom Custom/Jazz or 59
DiMarzio Air Zone/Jazz or 59 (maybe PAF Master)
DiMarzio Tone Zone/Jazz or 59 (maybe PAF Master)

Sweet catch. I wasn't familiar with this series; dig the looks. The satin black finish is slick.

Nice looking guitar and I think Yamaha makes descent guitars overall. I own a Yamaha RGX Custom guitar that's in my signature and it plays fabulous. Congrats on your purchase.;)

Nice looking guitar. I have an even older model Yamaha with 2 HB's. I had a CC/APH in mine for a long time and really loved it. However, I would also suggest the PATB-3 in the bridge and either an APH, PG or even Seth Lover in the neck. The Seth is actually my favorite neck humbucker of all time, for all styles of music. It used to be the APH, but I wanted a bit more clarity and chime in the neck, which the Seth delivers. Also, the new Slash neck might be nice, but I haven't tried it yet.

The PATB-3 is really a great, underrated pickup that I think will do exactly what you want.

First of all, WIN on the price $$$$

Second, shred baby shred! :headbang:

For strong B, not overly hot, and sweeter neck, I like PG neck, Custom Custom bridge on that.

Cool find! I would go with the Custom Custom in the bridge, but the neck could be anything. The Jazz is a little more modern hi-fi sounding than the 59 to me...but I would almost go for a Slash or Alnico II Pro in the neck.

Good ideas. Thanks!

IIRC, I read years ago that the same guy designed both the Yamaha RGX series and the Ibanez RG series. I owned an older Yamaha RG something or other and loved it - all except their version of a locking bridge - which would not stay in tune to save it's life. Still, I had fun recording with that guitar and have always wanted to try one of the newer models with a floyd bridge. Congrats and enjoy!
