Finally got me a Gibson Semi Hollow. 1973 Les Paul Signature .Yes, its a REAL Les Paul model. Players grade, but plays like buttah. It sounds Pretty acoustically nice sounding. Haven't played it yet except to try it , cause it does need some work on the volume pot and output jack; its cutting out. Everything checks out- no cracks, straight neck, truss rod works fine. Has had a refret , with bigger frets and a flatter radius, which works well for me. I traded a Marshall full stack cabinets only, and a Goo Goo Dolls Flying V, plus 350.00 cash. A little more than I wanted to give up truthfully, and now I'm short a Flying V, but wanted to sell the cabinets anyway, and no one was buying.

I'm thinking of naming this one, cause it has so much character. In fact, I shall do so now- I christen her "Paulina".

EDIT- After further review..actions a little high On the bass side, as is prone to happen with these older semi hollows, as that the bridges and necks are not anchored into solid wood as are solid body Les Pauls, but only are anchored onto a plywood top .

I have set the bridge down as far as it will go. NO buzzing! I'm happy, but I also realized i could have a true professional file down the (rare) bridge saddle slot ( and maybe a few other strings) to get the action better for moi.
There is plenty of bridge saddle space to file down without any concern , especially with the the big frets and the flatter radius.

P.S. The fret refret was done by a total pro. Its is flawless in every respect.

Re: NGD

I always liked those...I just wish the didn't suffer from mid 70's Norlin construction.

I have looked for one on and off for years since playing my first one in the mid 90's.

I hope one day I can find one I want to own.

Re: NGD

Nice score... Good vintage cabs, or the usual popular but actually mediocre 1960a/b nonsense?

Re: NGD

Very cool J, never even seen one of those before! Are those cream plastic covers on the pick ups? Are they buckers or 90's? Cool either way, hope you getting playing how you like it! Enjoy.

Re: NGD

Honestly that looks like a lumbering dinosaur, I think ill stick with my nimble BASSWOOD charvel fusion. :cool:

Re: NGD

Thank you people, I don't deserve this.

Kramersteen; yes, this is more of primarily a traditional Blues guitar,and with the right set-up, a hard Classic Rock and even a decent Jazz Axe for sure. In fact, I'd delight to hear what a blues master like Jeremy , a jazz master like Gibson 175, or a classic rock guy like many here could do with this ! But yeah, I want something a little more 10-16 lay down the strings on the frets type stuff . But you do sacrifice pure acoustic tone with that kind of action. Plus an 'ol girl whos 40+ years old might have different, more sophisticated moves . ;

.

It has a History in that when Norlin acquired Gibson, they wanted to bring Les Paul back on board with their program, so Les Paul and Norlin produced several guitars with Les Pauls electronic ideas. Guitar such as the Les Paul recording( and Ginormous' Bass), and a few others like this Les Paul signature.

TGWIF; I don't think models like this suffered as much from the Norlin cost cutting design thing as the pancaked Deluxes with thos aweful Minihumbcukers ,Les Pauls, and Specials and others

D1; The pickups are low impedance. As you can hear on the clip they sound pretty good. Plastic covered.
The special electronics can vary the impedance from what I have been able to gather, to simulate Humbucker, P-90. AND single coil. Kind of like a crude P-Rails maybe.;

Adieu: the cabinets, one of them was pretty special. A VERY rare JCM 800 limited edition Classic. I never see those come up for sale. Green tolex, and in sweet condition. Very very nice cabinet the guy walked away with. Very tight. No rattles, buzzes, but one of the speakers was bad, and I told the guy.But one of the best sounding cabinets I have ever heard. The speakers were nothing out of the ordinary besides one original 70's blackback..

The other cabinet was a normal JCM 800 cabinet.

Good to know if one f these rare pickups ever flake out, that I can call Seymour Duncan get them rewound.

I think I could make love with Paulina for hours. Nice git.

Thank you. They say ( and don't ask me who "they" are) that the hallmark of a good guitar is that you cannot put it down. I believe that , and particularly with acoustics, and this one is calling me now to pick it back up again.

Heres another nice clip I found. It illustrates some of the histrionics of the guitar, and has some tasty jazzy/blues licks ;

800 cabs are the good stuff... Or at least can be. None of that MiC gt75s stock nonsense there!

Re: NGD

Jer
that is a sweet score
cant wait for my next visit
I would so much like to "Visit" you new girl

you have the coolest stuff dude

Re: NGD

Great guitars. Now, you're the only other person I know with one.

The 3 way switch in the full ccw position is supposed to approximate a hb, middle P90, and full cw Fendery single. I usually leave mine in the middle, which recently crapped out, which brings me to my next point: that transformer inside that brings the low impedance pups up to high impedance for the top jack is incredibly fragile and irreplaceable. If you're thinking of freshening things up, TAKE IT TO SOMEBODY. If that thing bites it, you'll never find another and the thing will lose easily half it's value.

Nice that you got a refret. Mine's at BCR Music getting that done, right now, as well as being rewired.

Also: I doubt SD can rewind the things. They're epoxy potted, meaning once it's done, it's done. FWIW, one of mine has a crack that goes all the way across the cover and it's never been a problem.

Re: NGD

Cool . . . It's a little odd looking to me after so many years looking at my EPI dot, but I can see how the altered cutaway would play much nicer. Nice score!

What Norlin features? The only couple I can think of are the 3 pc maple neck and ridiculously low stock frets.
